Everybody loves gymnastics during the Olympics, but it’s a sport most of us forget about for the four years in between. Well this week, you might want to dust off your leotard-judging skills, because the World Championships have begun. There will be lots of great vaults and floor exercises over the next week, but the real ones to watch are the American women.
Team USA has basically slayed the last decade in women’s gymnastics, and this year looks to be no different. They won the team competition a year ago, and if all goes to plan this year will be no different. Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman have finally made their comebacks, so the team is looking pretty solid.
Speaking of Gabby and Aly, things between them could get heated. Each country is only allowed to have two gymnasts in the All Around final, so whoever does worse in qualifying won’t get to go to the final. (This happened to 2011 World Champion Jordyn Wieber at the Olympics, and there were lots of tears.)
We all love Gabby, but the real star right now is Simone Biles.
She was too young for the Olympics in 2012, but she’s won pretty much every important competition since the beginning of 2013. She’s the two-time defending World All Around Champion, and there’s no one who can beat her when she’s having a good day. Simone won four gold medals at Worlds last year (there are only six events), and she’ll be looking to repeat.
