The shrug emoticon is one of the most versatile, non-English forms of communication in a betch’s artillery. Honestly, the hair flip emoji is becoming super basic and the shrug emoticon’s apathy shits on the hair flip betch’s “sassiness,” or whatever you think she embodies.
The shrug is perfect to use in any and all circumstances a betch runs into over text. Just like us it’s passive aggressive, vague, and delicately straddles the line of ‘fuck-off’ and ‘I’m chill’ we pride ourselves on. Its only downside is that it does take a little bit longer to type, which is why it’s best to save it in your iPhone notes so you have it at your disposal when your mom asks when you’re coming home next. Let’s say your back-burner bro asks if you’re seeing anyone right now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, or your bestie asks if she’s coming off desperate to her SAB ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, or your dad accuses you of a being a (functioning) alcoholic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
It’s wildly indifferent: it’s not a no and it’s not a yes, but it does say that we couldn't care less about the question or answer. It can be used in just about any situation and allows us to win without really saying anything, which is pretty much the top of the betch’s pyramid of self-actualization. If Taylor was betchier, we’re sure her single would have been called “Shrug it Off.”
