Dark ‘n’ Stormy: Learn Your Cocktail

By Betchy Crocker

No, it isn’t the name you assigned your period feelings this month. A Dark ‘n’ Stormy is a magical drink bringing together our good friend alcohol and our holistic friend, ginger.

History: Like most rum-based cocktails, the Dark ‘n’ Stormy is the product of sailors (ahoy, betches). Back in the 1800s, rum was the drink of choice for those living lives on a boat; so much so that the British Royal Navy even allocated rum to sailors – rum which was sourced from the Caribbean and, namely, Bermuda. Would it be wrong to ask a boss to pay in alcohol? Asking for a friend.

In the 1860s, the Gosling Brothers rum distillery started making its “old rum” which blended a bunch of dark rums and is the Gosling’s Black Seal rum marketed today. Around the same time, ginger beer was brought to the Caribbean from the English colonists – Barritt’s Ginger Beer among the selection.

So, needless to say, at some point we assume some sailors got drunk, mixed the two, and named it a Dark ‘n’ Stormy.

  • 2 oz Goslings Black Seal rum (yes, it should really be this one)
  • 4 – 5 ounces ginger beer
  • a squeeze and a wedge of lime (optional)

There’s a method to this shit. Grab a tall glass and add a bunch of ice. Pour in the ginger beer then very gently pour the rum over top so that the two liquids layer without mixing. It should look like a cloud over the ginger beer HENCE THE NAME, YOU GUYS. Squeeze in a bit of the lime juice then throw in the lime wedge if you choose to use it.
