One of the most hyped moments of the VMAs was Kanye’s four minutes to do whatever he wanted. He ended up taking more than six minutes just talking, which honestly is only mildly overtime for Kanye. Most of the speech was about himself, but he managed to throw in a couple incredible digs at pop star-turned-snake in the grass Taylor Swift.
He started by acknowledging that he would probably lose Video of the Year to Beyoncé, but he was okay with it. “I can’t be mad. I’m always wishing for Beyoncé to win, so…” This is so perfect. Not only is it always an appropriate time to praise Bey, but the subtle Taylor shade is so real. It is, of course, a reference to the infamous 2009 VMA moment when Kanye ruined Taylor’s life by saying Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. Kanye doesn’t always do subtle well, but this was prime.
But the best, most shady moment, came later in the speech, when he pretty much dropped the subtle part and went for it. He was saying something unintelligible about violence, and then just switched topics:
“But bro, like, I love all y’all. That’s why I called her.”
Okay, so it might be an overstatement for Kanye to say that he loves Taylor Swift, but we obviously know he respected her enough to call her. The audience was going wild because Taylor happened to not be there, so it was basically all of Twitter hating Taylor in one room. It was epic.
The reason we love Kanye is because he does crazy shit that no one else would/could, and on Sunday night he delivered in a big way.
