Spring 2014 Trends: Cropped Crop Tops and Cut Outs

By The Betches

Despite the fact that you may wear your winter coat sometime this week, it's actually been Spring for a month now. Fucking Al Gore. But as always, with seasonal change comes rich assholes telling you what to wear. So, in the next couple weeks we're going to break down all trends of this season, detailing what's actually chic and what's legit straight from Chronicles of Narnia.

Trend #1: Even more Cropped Crop Tops and Cut outs

The crop top trend has been around longer than I've been a self diagnosed alcoholic. Yet it's still being walked down runways fashion week and fashion week again. So why's Spring 2014 crop top different than all other crop top trends? It's even MORE CROPPED (read: sluttier). Essentially the fashion gods are approving going out in a bra as long as our bottoms are high waisted. Perf.

Here are Vogue's criteria for Spring 2014's crop tops:

Dolce & Gabbana, Preen by Thronton Bregazzi, Ports 1961: Spring/Summer 2014

WOMANLY: A surprise twist on the summer two-piece, the pairing of elegant skirt and bra top gives ladylike dressing a deliciously subversive spin.

TAILORED: Crisply cut in sharp, clean lines, the tailored crop top has a cool modernity that praises form and function over femininity.

PRINTED: Go plain and lacy or bold and bright, but above all go matching. A cohesive ensemble says considered and intentional cool.

While Miranda Priestly and Anna Wintour will never steer you wrong, we can steer you into a more concentrated place: CUT OUTS. They're feminine aka womanly (what kind of fucking word is that?) and they're obvi tailored. I mean sure a printed ensemble will look cool if you can pull it off, but a solid black or white cut out crop top on your tan bod with a bright patterend or monochrome skirt or shorts is probs the chicest and hottest thing since the sliced oranges I've been putting in my morning glass of still.

Let's Shop

Since you can wear a crop top for almost any occasion, going out, a festival, your sister's graduation, the most important thing to do is gauge the sluttiness factor of the crop top and dress accordingly.

Ash Benzo in For Love & Lemons and Rihanna in Alexander Wang

Aka public-appropriateish lingerie. The key here is not to be popping out in places (really any place) and a high waisted bottom. While Rihanna can go out almost completely naked, you can't and shouldn't so keep it classy. Or just go to the pool because this is essentially a non-water-resistant bikini top. DIY idea: rummage through your bikini tops and go out in them.

Tailored Crop Top

Rita Ora in Sally Lapointe and Taylor Swift in J Mendel

Here's where you can get fucking fancy while still keeping it classy, San Diego. While I typically do not encourage looking to TSwift for fashion advice nor do I think one shoulder tops are flattering whatsoever, I happen to think the two looks above are extremely classic, obvi cropped, and not too TTH

Casual Crops

Julianne Hough in Lovers + Friends and Vanessa Hudgens in Jen's Pirate Booty

You may recognize a couple of these from our Celeb Fashion Breakdown of Coachella 2014; They're totes approp for a festival, bar night, outdoor brunch, the gym, getting hit on at the library, etc.

And Lastly, the Chic and Long Sleeved

Kendall Jenner in For Love & Lemons, aka one of my favorite tops ever

Whether the top is a sheer sweater or a slightly cropped cut out, long sleeve crop tops are great becasue you can wear the shortest shorts ever and be like, what? I'm wearing fucking long sleeves. Here are four must haves:

Don't try this at home:

Jennifer Lawrence in No Thanks.

The top is too long for this skirt. And the skirt is too awkward for the top. It needs to be higher, tighter, and not on JLaw's body. While she usually looks pretty amazing, this outfit screams I have nothing to wear so let me just throw on this apron!

Let's shop some other cut out shit for Spring: Shoes:

Olivia Palermo is obsessed with Acquazzurra's cut out shoes, and we are too but like, Olivia Palermo.
