Earlier this month, video was released of Planned Parenthood executives reportedly discussing the sale of fetal body parts.
The video released by “The Center for Medical Progress” is edited in a way that makes the PP execs look pretty bad, mostly because of the way they’re kind of callous in their discussion.
They are discussing fees and costs associated with the sale of fetal body parts, which is totally legal by the way. The way they’re discussing the issue seems to be more unethical than illegal by all standards, if anything.
Critics, and by critics I mean Fox News, say the video shows these people talking about illegally harvesting or selling organs of fetuses. Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood’s president, claims the group is doing nothing illegal, never changes their surgical abortion practices in favor of harvesting fetal cells or organs, and is being smeared.
What does anyone want with the cells or organs of unborn babies? Stem cells. Cells taken from aborted fetuses have been used for more than 50 years to create vaccines and are being researched as part of a possible cure for cancer.
Despite the fact you probably didn’t know about the cell harvesting, and disregarding your possible moral objection to the fact that it happens, it’s happening, it’s legal and it’s heavily regulated by government agencies.
Ok so that’s basically the rundown of the controversy, and if you worship at the altar of Bill O’Riley and Fox and Friends, this is where your time with my article needs to come to an end. Enjoy the rest of your day.
Are they gone? K cool.
Here’s why this released “secret video” matters: it shouldn’t.
I’m a card carrying feminist and as such, I support Planned Parenthood. Would I have an abortion? I can’t answer that because I haven’t been in a situation where I needed to consider that question, but I support the decision of women to do whatever they want with their own body.
Here’s a quote I got from Tumblr, but it totally applies: “A woman does not want an abortion like she wants an ice cream cone, a new dress, or a Porsche; she wants an abortion like an animal caught in a trap wants to gnaw off its own leg to escape.”
That being said, abortions only make up for a very, very small percentage of the actual services Planned Parenthood offers. From birth control to STD testing to general health exams, PP is more than an abortion clinic. In fact, I’d say it’s hardly an abortion clinic.
But the abortion thing is controversial and that’s what some crazy, nut-jobs like to focus on. In fact, some nut-jobs running our country are even dicking over female veterans because of this leaked video.
Check out this except from The Washington Post:
“The burgeoning controversy over Planned Parenthood's fetal-tissue practices may have claimed its first victim: a bipartisan bill to help wounded veterans have children.
The Women Veterans and Families Health Services Act, a bill authored by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) that would require fertility treatment and counseling for "severely wounded, ill, or injured" military members or veterans, had been expected to proceed through the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee on Wednesday. But Murray said she has asked that the bill be pulled thanks to proposed amendments from Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) -- including one that would have, in Tillis's words, prevented the Department of Veterans Affairs from working with "organizations that take human aborted babies' organs and sell them."
That was an unmistakable reference to recent criticism of Planned Parenthood's efforts to harvest fetal tissue for research purposes, a practice that has come under close scrutiny from conservatives after antiabortion activists published undercover videos that they say shows evidence of unethical and potentially illegal activities by Planned Parenthood executives.”
Mind you, a House committee is formally investigating the claims that Planned Parenthood acted illegally in the alleged harvesting or selling of fetal tissue, but their investigation is ongoing. Ongoing, meaning it isn’t complete and certain politicians should probably not be screwing over female veterans who need their promised government services based on hearsay, personal bias, and a YouTube video.
Oh if that’s not enough to grind your gears, Sarah Palin, who is actually no longer relevant in politics, is also calling for the heads of the Planned Parenthood execs. Right, because her family is so good at handling birth control on their own.
If anything illegal is actually going on, cool, I might change my mind on the issue. But for now, investigation pending, I’m not throwing out the baby with the bathwater. K, bad metaphor, but you get the point..
