Do you hear that? That’s the sound of the theater community holding space for the unspeakably stressful mystery of Ben Platt and Molly Gordon’s friendship… or perhaps former friendship. Just two minutes ago (almost two years ago now) these two were costarring in and promoting their hilarious movie, Theater Camp. If you haven’t seen it, you need to go watch it, immediately. I cried laughing. But in recent months, fans have been picking up on a growing distance between the actors, and there’s a theory that they’re no longer pals at all. So, what the hell could’ve happened between the Broadway-loving platonic soulmates? Are Ben Platt and Molly Gordon still friends?? People who were not cool in high school are desperate for answers, so I did a deep dive.

Um, friends follow each other on Instagram and although Molly still follows Ben, he does not follow her back. Sus indeed. Mind you, he follows more than 1,200 people, so this is really kind of a slap in the face. And that’s not the only thing that’s concerning fans — Ben got married to his husband, Noah Galvin, in September and Molly apparently didn’t attend! (Noah also does not follow Molly on Insta, in case you were wondering.) Skipping your childhood bestie and costar’s wedding indicates a pretty serious conflict, IMO. And what was she doing instead? Literally gallivanting around Venice, Italy, according to some sources. Not even close to a legit excuse. Molly and Ben haven’t publicly said anything about a change in their friendship status, so we just have to wonder and wait for now. Ugh.

Molly Gordon And Ben Platt’s History

Molly and Ben go wayyy back, which is why this rumored friend breakup is so distressing to some of us. They met when they were wee little kiddos at the Adderley School, a theater school in Los Angeles with camps and after school programs for youngins. Long before Theater Camp, Ben and Molly starred in shows at Adderley together, including Chicago and Damn Yankees.

Tweenage Molly and Ben even had a slight romantic connection — or so they thought. “She definitely had a crush on me, she will admit,” Ben told Out in July 2023. “And I thought I did too. Because when you’re a young gay kid, and you’re obsessed with your girl best friend, you’re like, ‘This must be what it means when you like someone.’” Alas, it was not meant to be. “Ultimately, I was very gay, unfortunately,” Ben noted. “And also fortunately.”

Whatever drama happened here, I think Ben should star in a movie about it and get his dad to produce it, ’cause we need the tea.
