Benson Boone and Reneé Rapp beefing over backflips is by far my favorite entertainment news of the week. One thing about Reneé? She’s really not into media training. So, it’s not shocking that she casually started a feud last month during her appearance on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang (the best hour of my life, actually).
While chatting with Amy, the “Leave Me Alone” singer threw some not-so-subtle shade at boys who do backflips. She didn’t name any names, but we all immediately knew who she was talking about… There’s really only one famous boy out there whose entire brand is flipping, despite the fact that he’s a pop star and not a gymnast! Apparently, Benson’s been deep in promo mode for his (~apolitical~) sophomore album, American Heart, and missed that episode of Good Hang. During a June 25 BBC Radio 1 interview, the host showed Benson that clip of Reneé dissing him, and the moonbeam ice cream king seemed kinda burned. As I saw someone on X say, “You Ben some, you Boone some.”
Benson had a pretty passionate response for Reneé, and I’m considering this official celeb beef now. Like, it’s so serious, so here’s a full breakdown of the Benson Boone and Reneé Rapp backflipping beef.
Naturally, Amy and Reneé had to discuss the concept of boys doing gymnastics. “Can I be honest?” Reneé asked before declaring, “I’m not big into boys flipping.” Amy clarified, “Doing backflips?” and Reneé nodded. “We gotta cut that out,” the Mean Girls star said. Amy agreed and called out “any kind of goofy gymnastics” performed by a male. I mean, did they lie? Reneé then emphasized, “I don’t like boys!” So, I doubt she’d approve of any activity done by a straight man, and TBH, I’m with her on that.
Benson seemed a bit caught off guard when the BBC Radio 1 host showed him that clip. He had to clarify, “Reneé said that?” After a second of processing, he replied, “What the hell? Okay, Reneé, so I see that you have pointed a gun in my direction. Um, I’m just gonna put up a shield, deflect it, and hope that it comes back your way.”
“You try doing a backflip!” the “Mystical Magical” singer continued. “You try doing a backflip, and then let me know how that goes. And once you master how to do it, then maybe you can tell me what to stop or start doing. Okay?” Benson added, “Until I see that backflip, I will be flipping in your face!” Damn. Not a threat I’d like to receive!!

Mind you, he said later in the interview that he “loves” Reneé, and these two follow each other on Insta. The ~feud~ is unserious but very entertaining.
