Fashion isn’t funny except for nights like the Met Gala when the internet’s best comedians gather round to feast on the visual buffet Anna Wintour’s annual party never fails to provide. Who can forget that time when Frank Ocean brought a creepy neon green robot baby as his date instead of a living, breathing human being? Or when Katy Perry was dressed up as a literal chandelier by Jeremy Scott and everyone called her a yassified Lumiere from Beauty and The Beast. As opposed to 2019’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” the theme of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” didn’t sound particularly hilarious, but I knew I could depend on bored A-listers with the best stylists money can buy to turn their wholesome “Garden of Time” black tie looks into something more confusing than the last drunk text I sent my ex. Especially considering 2024’s co-chairs are a little more outside of the box than we typically expect.
I mean, Zendaya makes perfect sense considering she is the fashion icon of her generation who could be cast in movies solely based on her passion for press tour looks (and seriously Z, if you want to take another stab at pop music, we’ll be here for it). I can even understand Jennifer Lopez making the cut as a star from New York (have you even heard of the Bronx?) considering the buzz around her critically clowned documentary, This Is Me: Now. But Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny for the committee? That had to be the work of a Gen Z intern with a great sense of humor. I don’t know that anything the fourth-best Chris (Pine, Evans, Messina, Hemsworth, Pratt, or GTFO) has put on top of his body has managed to hold my attention before, but I’m giving him and all of the other co-chairs the credit they deserve for the jokes that allow us to the laugh at the capitalist hellscape we’re living in for once (as opposed to my nightly rage cry).
