Dear Bravo, Jen Returning To ‘RHOSLC’ After Prison Is A Shah-Mazingly Bad Idea
I'd call it a shah-t mess, actually.
The Housewives-to-prison pipeline keeps gaining case studies of Bravo stars with serious legal woes at an alarming rate. I mean, just look at the Grande Dame, Karen Huger, who now faces up to two years in prison after her DUI conviction. Still, the off-camera crimes I still find among the most egregious are the ones committed by one Jennifer Shah. Sure, Teresa Giudice admitted she was guilty in a federal court of law of conspiracy to commit several kinds of fraud, including mail, wire, and bankruptcy. But you don’t have to be an ethics expert to understand that defrauding one of the most vulnerable communities out there, the elderly, is a lot more Morally Corrupt™ than lying to the bank.
Jen Shah, after protesting her innocence to the detriment of everyone in Utah’s eardrums, eventually pleaded guilty to “running a nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme.” As the US Attorney prosecuting the case summed it up, “Jennifer Shah finally face[d] the consequences of the many years she spent targeting vulnerable, elderly victims” who were “lured in by false promises of financial security, but in reality…defrauded of their savings” when she showed up for her 78-month prison sentence. Now, with Coach Shah’s wife scoring another even earlier release, the Bravo streets are talking about whether she’ll be welcomed back with open arms to her old show. With season 5 coming to a close, everyone’s wondering: will Jen Shah return to RHOSLC once free? I have a lot of Big Feelings about this one.
Will Jen Shah return to RHOSLC?
It seems unlikely, but possible Jen Shah could return to The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City after she is released from prison in 2026. Why? Unlike other Housewives who have been in handcuffs, Jen was not remorseful of her crimes during her time on the show and, in fact, used her reality TV platform to assert her innocence right until the very end.
In case there’s any confusion, Jen’s exact words were, “I’m not going to take a plea deal when I’m not guilty. I’m innocent,” while implying her co-defendants were not. In the hard-to-watch season 3 eps, Jen swears on her father’s grave, her children, and her mother’s own “drained” bank account that she is innocent, all while knowing she was not. This essentially means Jen not only allegedly committed crimes while under Bravo’s employ but also attempted to use the network’s reach to help with damage control for said crimes. Is there any bigger liability?
Andy himself said Jen’s incarceration makes her return “off the table,” at least for now. Though Andy first publicly wished Jen got “no jail time,” after she eventually owned up to her crimes, he set up a 1:1 interview with Jen to give the Bravoverse closure. Jen bailed on that conversation last minute because of Bravo’s “unwillingness to remove contractual provisions” that she insisted were intended to make her look bad. (I guess that’s a valid worry when the truth is incredibly unflattering). I can’t imagine Daddy Cohen is thrilled about how that situation shook out and Jen’s many lies sitting next to him on the couch.
But, should Jen Shan return to The Real Housewives at all?
Unless I missed the memo when the show became The Really Mean Felons of Salt Lake City, I don’t think Jen deserves a second chance, and here’s why. Not only has she admitted to knowingly being a dangerous person who actively ruined people’s lives for a luxury living (!!!), but she was also dangerous on set. Heather Gay’s famous black eye came from Jen, which Heather finally admitted after letting the blame fall on production. Those are the ingredients for a toxic workplace if you ask me, which Jen has also been accused of fostering for her own staff, lest we forget.
More than that, the women are THRIVING without even mentioning Jen Shah anymore. Without Jen there to suck the air out of the room, Mary Cosby, for example, finally has the room to breathe. The results speak for themselves. Why rock the boat for someone who clearly doesn’t respect the fact that with great power comes great responsibility and is willing to take down others with her?
I’m not saying there’s no room for forgiveness and growth in the world of reality. Several of my favorite Bravolebs, including Nene Leakes, had a history with the law — before their tenure on the show. For those who get caught in a shit storm on camera, the stakes are higher with the world watching in real-time.
For all her faults, Teresa was extremely humbled and remorseful in the aftermath of receiving jail time. As difficult as I’m sure it was to film during that painful period for her family, the Giudices did so with vulnerability. The camaraderie actually made for some of the show’s most powerful seasons.
Do we really think the woman who already got in several violent temper tantrums over dinner cocktails with literally every existing current cast member would be able to own her shit in an inspiring way? My bet is on no. If we can all collectively agree to ex-communicate Sandoval for cheating on his girlfriend, pretty sure scamming hundreds of old people out of a comfortable end of days should count too. If anything, Jen should appear in a reunion segment to give Andy that conversation she promised so long ago and prove she’s sorry.
Jen Shah’s Friendships With Her Former RHOSLC Castmates
Some of the Salt Lake ladies do still have love for Jen, however. Meredith Marks revealed in 2024 that she briefly spoke to Jen in prison and believes Mrs. Shah is taking “accountability.” Because Jen is serving her time and paying her restitution (things she legally has to do whether she likes it or not), Meredith believes a second chance isn’t off the table. “We all do things that we’re not proud of that are wrong at times,” Meredith explained, though she conceded Jen’s oopsie was “a bad one.”
Meredith, Lisa, and Heather all declared on WWHL that they’d take Jen back over Monica Garcia, which I find to be extremely goofy since Monica was only running an Instagram troll account, mostly targeted at exposing Jen. Spoiler alert: she had good reason!! I wonder if any of their tunes will change at the season 5 reunion after reflecting on the level of lies told.
Ultimately, I of course agree that Jen deserves a second chance at a happy, productive life, that’s what happens when reformative prison works correctly. But that doesn’t mean she deserves to be instantly rewarded with TV fame and fortune again. Sometimes there are no takesies backsies, and Jen, IMO, has taken enough.
Jen Shah’s Prison Release Date
Jen’s release date was moved up to November 3, 2026, from the previous date of August 30, 2028 (which was already one less year than her initial sentence). She was originally sentenced to six and a half years in prison in January 2023.
