Camila Cabello Just Gave A Detailed Update On Her Relationship With Normani

It's a huge day for Harmonizers.

I simply can’t imagine my tweenhood without Fifth Harmony. To this day, I still find myself randomly belting and shaking ass to “BOSS / Michelle Obama, purse so heavy gettin’ Oprah dollars” and “That’s my giiiirl.” Say what you want, but those are undeniable bops. Sadly though, it seems like it was more fun to be a dedicated Harmonizer than it was to actually be in the band. We now know that there was a lack of creative control and a lot of tension behind the scenes during those brief but beautiful six years (or four and a half for Camila Cabello, who dipped early). One of the more notable Fifth Harmony conflicts is, of course, the Camila and Normani situation. But it seems like we’ve been getting possible friendship breadcrumbs from these two as of late… So, are Camila Cabello and Normani actually friends now? Here’s what went down between the former bandmates and and an update on where they stand today.

In a December interview with Nylon, Camila shared that she and Normani recently caught up at Paris Fashion Week, and they’re starting to heal their relationship. “I remember times when we’d just be laughing so hard,” she reflected. “With space, we can go back and tap into that.” Camila and Normani’s reunion at Paris Fashion Week marked the first time the singers have been publicly seen together since 2018. “The past couple of times I’ve seen her, I say something and she laughs really hard,” Camila told the magazine. “It doesn’t feel like we’re strangers. We’re getting back to the times when we really close.”

Over the summer, the former bandmates also supported each other’s new music on social media. After Normani released her long-awaited debut album, Dopamine, in June, Camila congratulated her on Instagram. “Putting out a project is vulnerable and hard and you are doing it beautifully,” Camila wrote. “Congratulations on your first album and many more to come!!!!!!!” Normani thanked her in a reply and emphasized, “This seriously means a lot, and so [very] proud of you. You’re next, let’s goooo.” (Camila released her latest album, C, XOXO, later that month.) The girls are so back, which is impressive considering their complicated history.

What Happened Between Camila Cabello And Normani?

As we know, Camila left Fifth Harmony in 2016 on pretty bad terms. After she announced her departure, the rest of the band claimed in a statement that they were “informed via [Camila’s] representatives” that she was quitting, and Camila said that was “simply not true.” Plus, there was the whole ~fake Camila getting thrown off the stage at the 2017 VMAs~ situation.

During her recent chat with Nylon, Camila noted that she didn’t have the proper “conflict resolution skills” to deal with the band drama back then. “How do you deal with being left out?” she said. “How do you deal with jealousy? How do you deal with these things without hurting yourself or other people?”

But long after she left the band, her racist social media posts scandal further damaged her relationship with Normani. In 2019, several of Camila’s years-old posts featuring offensive memes resurfaced, and Normani shared her thoughts in a 2020 statement to Rolling Stone. “It was devastating that this came from a place that was supposed to be a safe haven and a sisterhood, because I knew that if the tables were turned I would defend each of them in a single heartbeat,” she wrote.

The “Motivation” singer continued, “It took days for her to acknowledge what I was dealing with online and then years for her to take responsibility for the offensive tweets that recently resurfaced. Whether or not it was her intention, this made me feel like I was second to the relationship that she had with her fans.”
