Sigh. I think Rachael Kirkconnell was just as shocked by that whack Matt James breakup post as we all were. At least, Rachael just subtly hinted at that being the case. The girlies have been in professional detective mode ever since the former bachelor shared a prayer on January 16, revealing he and Rachael are over. “Father God, give Rachael and I strength to mend our broken hearts,” he wrote alongside a throwback pic of them meeting on The Bachelor. “Give us a peace about this decision to end our relationship that transcends worldly understanding.” Not only was the caption super strange and unlike him, but it also came just hours after he posted happy couple content from his London trip with Rachael.

The internet went wild with theories about WTF could’ve happened here. Some assumed Matt was hacked, and others managed to interpret this as an engagement announcement (you have to admire the imagination), but few could actually accept this was real.

Now we know it’s definitely real (I think): Rachael liked a comment about the Matt James breakup that speculated she was “blindsided” by his post.

The comment was left on Rachael’s latest Instagram post, her December 5, 2024 birthday tribute for Matt. At the time, she shared an adorable video montage and wrote, “happiest of birthdays to my best friend, my teammate, my sous chef, the man that has my whole heart. you fill it (and my tummy) with so much love and laughter and i’m so thankful i get to dance through this life with you.” Since Matt turned off comments on his religious breakup announcement, people have been heading to Rachael’s comments section to share their theories about the split.

One person commented, “The more I’m thinking about it, the more I think he completely blindsided her with this. Give her some grace and let her respond in her own time.” And Rachael confirmed that theory with a like! That’s her only response to the breakup post and speculation about it so far, but it tells us a lot: Matt wasn’t hacked, they’re certainly not engaged, and he didn’t bother to plan a joint post or wait until she was ready to share the news. I simply must know what on earth went down during that pizza outing… Matt shared videos of him and Rachael enjoying pizza together in London less than a day before he shared the breakup news.
