200 years later or so, we’re finally getting Shrek 5!! I could cry. As if the OG cast wasn’t iconic enough, there’s a brand new addition, and you might know her from the little indie film, Dune, or the great television masterpiece of our time, Shake it Up. I’m of course referring to your favorite actress’ favorite actress, Zendaya. The Euphoria star is joining the beloved franchise to play Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia. Zendaya (animated ogre version) is low-key giving Brooklyn baddie in this trailer with her bangs and nose ring. No notes from me.

Since the first Shrek movie came out in 2001, there have been three sequels and two Puss in Boots spin-offs. Frankly, I think we’re gonna need at least a dozen more sequels, plus several Shrek’s daughter spinoffs. Queen Cameron Diaz is back as Fiona, Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as the beloved Donkey, and Mike Myers is playing Shrek again, of course. And as mentioned above… The woman, the myth, the legend, Zendaya, is joining the cast to play Shrek and Fiona’s daughter! I’m not okay. Imagine having Dune, Euphoria, Shake It Up, The Greatest Showman, and Shrek on your resume — and that’s not even all of it. She’s just That Girl.

BTW, Eddie is still campaigning for Donkey spinoff movie, and he has my full support. “You know, they did Puss in Boots movies,” he told Etalk back in 2023. “I was like, ‘They should have done a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots.’ I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.” Not the Puss in Boots shade!

Shrek 5 Release Date

Prepare yourselves: Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on December 23, 2026!! The release is timed to DreamWorks’ 25th anniversary. This will be the first Shrek movie since 2010’s Shrek Forever After and after 16 years of waiting, it better be a masterpiece. (Considering Zendaya’s involved, I know it will be.)

Sadly, we haven’t heard any plot details just yet (and the trailer is literally 27 seconds), but stay tuned for updates. TBH, I’m guessing we can expect more of Shrek journeying in the land of Far Far Away. Plus, we’ll get some fun family dynamics now that his daughter’s a part of the story!
