Chatting with Rachel Sennott and Jordan Firstman via Zoom felt more like FaceTiming close friends than conducting a professional interview, but maybe that’s just me being parasocial because I feel like I know them from TV. The comedic icons’ real-life friendship makes it easy for them to play chaotic BFFs in I Love LA.
In our exclusive convo, Rachel and Jordan spilled the tea on I Love LA season 2, teasing more sides of Maia and Charlie. We also touched on their current pop girl obsessions (they just casually met Robyn at a wedding), the BTS of their Venmo campaign highlighting the Stash Rewards program, and that instant classic photo of Rachel hanging with a star-studded crew at a recent Paul McCartney concert. Yes, that was indeed her side profile.
Betches: It’s so nice to meet you guys.
Rachel: Lovely to meet you.
Jordan: Nice to meet you!
Betches: I’m such a big fan of I Love LA. Congrats on getting renewed! Is there anything you can tease about season 2?
Rachel: We’re in the writers’ room right now, and it’s been so fun. Nothing super specific, but I'm excited to dig a little deeper with all the characters and see more sides of them. I think we got to set them up in a fun way. And now, we’ll be revealing different parts of them that we haven't seen yet and also putting them with other characters that have different perspectives into the world. I think it's gonna be a lot of fun.
Betches: I miss Lukas already. He was a legend.
Jordan: I know. I mean, maybe there’s a dream sequence, a ghost story—
Rachel: We bring him back to life.
Betches: Do you have a favorite memory from filming season 1?
Jordan: Oh my god. Unlimited.
Rachel: Unlimited. I mean, the first overnight because that’s when we all like locked in. It was the birthday party scene in the pilot.
Betches: I was rewatching the finale, and I really love that Addison Rae’s “Fame is a Gun” is in there. Which pop girls are you listening to right now? And are there any that you want in the soundtrack in the future?
Jordan: Ohh. Right now Slayyyter’s new album is incredible. I am obsessed. Like track by track. The new Robyn album is incredible, too. Honestly, a Robyn cameo would be major.
Rachel: Incredible. I’m addicted to her. I love her. And she’s just fabulous in real life.
Jordan: 100 percent.
Rachel: Like so chill.
Jordan: We sat next to her at a wedding once, and she was so nice and you’re just like, “Oh, you are the coolest person ever and no one will ever come close.”
Betches: That’s awesome.
Rachel: We were like, “We have to be cool in front of her.”
Betches: Okay, she has to make an appearance in the soundtrack… or on the show.
Rachel: Or both! Who knows?
Betches: Or both. So, your new Venmo spot is hilarious. How did your friendship dynamic shape that experience?
Rachel: Honestly, we had a damn blast. Because we’ve been friends for so many years and then on top of that, a lot of the crew were our close friends and our stylists were there, so it was such a fun set. Yeah, it was like the best time.
Jordan: It was a dream. Like we’re actually getting to do something for a service that we use all the time already, so we’re not having to lie, which sometimes you do. It was easy to lock in because we actually know about it and use it. Venmo’s that girl.
Rachel: I love Stash because I love like the gamification of anything. I like seeing myself get points. I selected a bundle for Uber Eats and things that I use a lot, and then every time I’m using them, I’m like—
Jordan: It’s free. Girl math. And our cards are pink. It’s a conversation starter. Like you might have a cute barista who’s like, “Oh my god, your card is pink,” and you’re like, “Do you wanna… kiss?”
Rachel: We have other colors too, but we both chose pink because we’re a girl and gay guy.
Betches: What would you say your most toxic spending habits are?
Jordan: Ohhhh.
Rachel: A lot of times we'll do like a big group dinner with seven people or something, and then it's like we're not gonna torture and be like we're all splitting it. So, then you grab the tab for everyone… But now you want to because then you get all the points.
Jordan: I think my toxic trait is letting Rachel pay for the dinners and not saying anything about it. Actually, that's not true though, because Rachel, who paid for the last dinner?
Rachel: You.
Jordan: Yeah, did some of the dishes come out for free? Did they gift us some free dishes? Yes. Were all of them free? No.
Betches: Such a good friend. Okay, I also have to ask this because I’m curious. There’s a viral photo going around from the Paul McCartney concert the other night with a bunch of celebrities, and it looks like you’re in it, Rachel. Is that you? And if so, what was that experience like?
Rachel: I was there. It was incredible.
Betches: That VIP section is like the best photo ever.
Jordan: Oh my god. I need to see it. Send it to me.
Rachel: Me realizing that I knew all the songs, but I wasn't ready for how moved I was gonna be. I was like, Paul McCartney is really hitting for me. In that photo, you see half my face, and everyone else is like, wind in their hair… but I had a good time.
