Pregnant Cardi B Gave Us A Much Needed Lesson In Sex Education

I love Cardi B, but can not stand her ex-husband. And everything I’ve learned about her relationship with Offset has been against my will. I know she wanted to stand by her man, but every time Offset (in the words of Kim Kardashian) “dogged her and embarrassed the shit out of her” and yet she still took him back, I wanted to scream a little bit. So you can’t even begin to imagine my joy when I found out that not only had they broken up (apparently for good this time) but that Cardi also allegedly went and had sex with someone else while pregnant with Offset’s child. I mean, she admitted it herself on Instagram live. It really just tickled me like nothing else.

But of course, any joy I find on the internet is short lived because of the absolutely stupid comments from uneducated, misogynistic people. And aside from sexist claims that Cardi B was wrong for having sex while pregnant with someone else’s kid, there were also just completely idiotic (and totally inaccurate claims) about having sex while pregnant at all. Once again, sex education has failed us all and so we need to have a talk about pregnancy sex.

Isn’t It Dangerous For Pregnant Women To Have Sex?

No. “Most women can engage in sexual activity right up until delivery,” fertility specialist Dr. Sam Najmabadi tells Betches. “Sex is safe in a normal, healthy pregnancy unless your doctor advises against it for a medical reason.”

But Won’t The Fetus Get Hurt?

Again, no. That’s not how it works.

“In a healthy pregnancy, having sex does not harm the fetus,” Dr. Najmabadi says. He explains that the fetus is protected inside the uterus because it’s surrounded by amniotic fluid, the uterine walls, and the cervix forms which is a protective barrier.

Okay, But Orgasming While Pregnant Is Dangerous. Right?

Once again, no. “Orgasm by the female partner or the semen released in the vagina can cause a mild uterine contractions, which is usually harmless,” Dr. Najmabadi says. But those typically go away after a short period of time.

And before you even ask about the hormones you release when you orgasm, yes you release oxytocin after climaxing but that is not harmful t the baby in a normal pregnancy.

So Is It Ever Unsafe To Have Sex While Pregnant?

Only in really rare cases — and in these cases, your doctor would let yu know. If you’re having vaginal bleeding, having a preterm labor (or a history of preterm birth), placenta previa (when the placenta covers the cervix), cervical insufficiency, or a ruptured membrane (aka your water breaking), then yes your doctor will probably recommend against sex. But other than that, all types of sex are usually good to go — even if it’s not with your baby daddy.

“Overall sexual activity during a normal pregnancy is natural and recommended,” Dr. Najmabadi says. And if the father of your future child is a cheating piece of shit who’s embarrassed you on multiple occasions, then having sex with someone else is not only normal, but recommended (my words, not the doctor’s).
