The girls are fighting, and by “the girls,” I mean Wendy’s and Katy Perry (and Kesha). On April 14, the “Woman’s World” singer was on the highly anticipated Blue Origin all-female spaceflight with Gayle King and Jeff Bezos’ fiancée, Lauren Sánchez. Following the 11-minute space trip, Katy and the other women received backlash for supporting a (evil) billionaire, being wildly out of touch, and wasting resources. Celebrities and normal people alike participated in the discourse… and so did Wendy’s, randomly. Their comments targeted at Katy were pretty surprising coming from a fast food brand, and they seemingly inspired Kesha to share her own messy post. Now, Wendy’s has shared a not-quite-apology statement on the matter. Here’s a full breakdown of the Wendy’s, Katy Perry, and Kesha drama.

Wendy’s And Katy Perry Feud, Explained

What Did Wendy’s Say About Katy Perry?

Shortly after the space flight, Pop Crave announced, “Katy Perry has returned from space.” It was on that post that the Wendy’s account commented: “Can we send her back.” Listen… I giggled. Sorry. The food chain social media person (or people) took it a step further with another tweet poking fun at the singer. “When we said women in stem this isn’t what we meant,” they wrote. In Katy’s defense, she did say she was very “excited to learn more about stem”! Hours after these tweets, Kesha (who isn’t Katy’s biggest fan) added fuel to the fire by posting a photo of herself smirking and sipping from a Wendy’s cup.

Following the controversial Wendy’s tweets, a source “close to the situation” told People that Katy deserves an apology from the fast food chain. “Their recent posts on X aimed at Katy Perry were not only disrespectful, but blatantly inappropriate,” the source said about Wendy’s. “This wasn’t harmless banter, this was a billion-dollar brand using its platform to publicly demean a woman.” The insider emphasized that it’s “irresponsible” for a “billion-dollar brand” to join in on hate. Lots of people on X seemed to share that opinion.

“Telling a woman that she should be ‘sent back’ is shameful bullying and reflects a troubling willingness to tear down in today’s society,” the People source added. “What’s worse is that the face of Wendy’s is a woman, which makes this decision not just hypocritical, but painfully ironic.”

Wendy’s Shares a Statement About Katy Perry Tweets

Interestingly, Wendy’s didn’t exactly apologize for the tweets — even after that insider’s statement. However, they did say in their own statement to People: “We always bring a little spice to our socials, but Wendy’s has a ton of respect for Katy Perry and her out-of-this-world-talent.” Riiight, they would just prefer if she kept that otherworldly talent out in space. Guess we won’t be seeing Katy in any Wendy’s commercials ever!
