As two single moms navigating the unhinged world of MomTok, Layla Taylor and Miranda McWhorter stick together. Despite their ~interesting~ shared history (Layla briefly dated Miranda’s ex-husband, Chase McWhorter), their bond only grew stronger during the filming of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season 3.

“Even though we love all of the girls in the group, I think that with how closely Layla and I’ve gotten, it allows for an added safe space,” Miranda told Betches in an exclusive interview.

Season 3 drops on November 13, and between Jessi Ngatikaura’s rumored affair with Marciano Brunette and the girls’ ongoing war with Demi Engemann, things are about to reach record levels of messy. “#Momtok is back, but damaging revelations and allegations threaten its future,” per the official synopsis. Loyalties will be tested, trust will waver, and as Layla puts it in the trailer: “Worst case scenario, someone leaves with their extensions ripped out of their head.”

Will MomTok survive this? We’ll have to wait and see. Chatting with Betches, Layla and Miranda teased the upcoming season, opened up about their evolving friendship, and shared their thoughts on Whitney Leavitt and Jen Affleck’s Dancing with the Stars journeys.

Who do you guys think will surprise fans the most this season?

Layla: This is honestly a really good season for a lot of women. Miranda has stepped into herself more and was able to speak up in rooms, so I was really proud of her, and Michaela shares more of her story. Jessie shares more of what she’s been going through in her marriage. All the women have gone more in depth this season, and I’m excited for the audience to see more sides of everyone.

Miranda: Yeah, honestly, I think Layla, you’re probably up there for sure. You definitely came into yourself a lot more, and I’m excited for people to see Spicy Layla.

In your opinion, who’s about to become the group’s new villain?

Layla: I think Demi is runnin’ it back!

Layla, you’ve opened up about how being a single mom and a breadwinner has changed the way you viewed your role. How did filming season 3 allow you to show a new side of yourself?

Layla: I just think showing more depth to me individually. With this group of MomTok, we’re sometimes kind of grouped into each other as a whole, and I think that this season has given me the opportunity to individualize myself from other women. Being a single mom is something that I’m very proud of. It’s hard. It’s taxing. But it’s so rewarding. Miranda can relate to that too. And I love that we’re able to show a different aspect in this group that we’re not married, we’re single moms that we’re able to do it on our own.

Miranda, when you look back at the first few seasons, what surprised you most about what people assumed about you versus what you were actually experiencing?

Miranda: For so long, I was pretty quiet and reserved, I think mostly out of fear. I had a lot of fear regarding certain expectations or social pressures, religious pressures. As time went on, I feel like I really found myself and realized that by showing up authentically, it allowed for people to see who I actually am rather than just making assumptions. When I’m not speaking up, it allows certain narratives to kind of spin out of control.

That’s been validating and rewarding to be who I really am. You’re always gonna have people that don’t like you and that’s fine. It’s, you know, easy for me to tolerate that. And as seasons go on, I feel like I’ve come more and more into that where I just become more and more myself, so yeah, it’s been nice.

How has your guys’ relationship evolved in this upcoming season, and what will fans see that they haven’t seen before between you two?

Layla: I think that me and Miranda get a lot closer this season. Season 2, I feel like we’re still kind of getting to know each other and she’s coming into the group new like newer…

Miranda: I was in a relationship too.

Layla: Yeah, we didn’t have a deeper relationship before this experience started, so I think the audience will just see us get a lot closer. People always say they love that me and her are close because we have like a lot in common.

Miranda: I think it’s really helped us both come out of our shell because it can be really intimidating when you’re in a group where there’s a lot of opinions and we have a lot of big personalities. It’s been a lot easier for me to be myself because I can be wholeheartedly myself around Layla, which has been really nice.

What did you learn about yourselves this season?

Layla: I think when I get heated I black out at the moment and don’t remember what I say until I watched it back this season and I’m like, damn, OK, you do have some spice to you, but makes good TV.

Any fun BTS moments from filming this season that you can tease?

Layla: I think one of my favorite moments is when we were in St. George on a little girls trip and we were able to do a fun little activity which we don’t do a lot of. I feel like when we go on girls trips, it’s kind of like dinners or like things like that, but we don’t do like a lot of like cool fun stuff. So, it’s just, you know, have fun, let loose for a second, not have it always be revolving around drama.

Have you guys been watching Dancing with the Stars? Thoughts on Jen and Whitney’s performances?

Layla: Yes, I’ve been fortunate enough that I’ve been able to come to a couple of tapings out of it. I went to one last night and me and Miranda went to one last week. We’ve been trying to support like as much as we possibly can, and it’s been so cool to see the girls absolutely killing it. I would have never imagined that we get cool opportunities like Dancing with the Stars. It’s just so surreal to be able to see all those women kind of get these cool opportunities and the girls are doing such a good job. I was heartbroken when Jen got cut. It was really sad, but I’m excited to see Whitney and see how far she gets in the competition as well.

Miranda: We feel like dance moms just sitting just like we’re sitting there like holding our breath like “You’re doing amazing, sweetie!”
