Can someone please make a decent, fun movie where none of the main characters are terminally ill? Because I’m officially drained after Netflix’s My Oxford Year and now Prime Video’s The Map That Leads to You. Both times, I thought I was in for a cutesy, lighthearted rom-com, and both times I wound up sobbing uncontrollably by the end. The Map That Leads to You stars Madelyn Cline as Heather and KJ Apa as Jack (living for the Outer Banks/Riverdale crossover).

Heather’s on a post-grad Europe trip with her besties when she meets Jack on a train — he climbs up to the luggage storage area above her and uses it as a bed. Ya know, as movie characters do. Heather and Jack have an instant connection, he low-key stalks her a bit, and the next thing ya know, they’re inseparable and madly in love. But of course, it doesn’t last. Jack completely ghosts everyone and vanishes at the end of the trip. So, what’s his secret? Does he die in the movie? Here’s a much-needed breakdown of the Map That Leads to You ending.

At the end of Heather’s Europe trip, Jack agrees to go back to New York with her to give their relationship a fair chance. (She’s starting that oh-so-exciting banking job.) He does go to the airport with her and they go through security together, but then he goes to the bathroom… and never comes back. Heather’s forced to board the plane alone and gets one text from Jack: “I’m really sorry.” He gives no explanation for his disappearance and blocks her number.

Heather moves on with her life, trying out the banking job, hating it, and realizing she needs to pursue a different path. She’s honest with her father about all of that. Although Jack ghosted her and cut their romance short, he did teach her an important lesson: how to just live, be free, and disregard useless expectations.

During the holidays, Heather’s bestie, Connie, shares the news that she and Jack’s friend, Raef, are engaged. (It’s giving child bride, but love is love, IG.) Connie reveals that they’re having a spring wedding in Barcelona where they met. Naturally, Heather’s a bridesmaid.

At the wedding, Heather asks Raef about Jack, and Raef says that he didn’t RSVP to the wedding, but he did leave a letter for her. That’s when we learn that Jack has a terminal cancer diagnosis. In the letter, he apologizes, explaining that he just wanted to spare Heather the heartbreak. He explains that his grandfather’s journal was a way to run away from his illness, but he’s grateful that it led him to her.

Heather, desperate to find Jack, remembers a conversation where he told her about a festival his grandfather loved in the Spanish village of Santa Pau. He’d described it as people “dancing in the face of death.” With that memory in mind, she heads to Santa Pau and of course spots him in the middle of a crowd. “I’m here now, and I love you, and I want to dance,” she says. The movie ends with them kissing at the festival.

We don’t know anything about Jack’s treatment plan or if he dies in the near future — we just know the lovebirds found each other again and get to enjoy the present moment.
