I love an expensive Nicole Kidman murder mystery limited series as much as the next person with taste, so of course, I was immediately sat for Netflix’s Perfect Couple. And it didn’t disappoint! This latest Nicole masterpiece takes place in Nantucket, where Amelia (Eve Hewson), a zoologist, is set to marry Benji (Billy Howle), a member of the super wealthy Winbury clan. But things take a dark turn when Amelia’s influencer bestie and maid of honor, Merritt (Meghann Fahy) is found dead in the bay outside of the Winbury mansion. Instead of an opulent wedding, there’s a messy murder investigation.

Honestly, most of these characters are sus, but only one of them is responsible for the murder. Let’s get into it: Here’s who killed Merritt in Perfect Couple and why they did it.

*Spoiler alert, obviously!!

Perfect Couple Ending Explained

Who Killed Merritt In Perfect Couple?

Abby Winbury (Dakota Fanning)! That sneaky little pregnant bitch. I knew it from her first convo with the detective where she looked suspicious as fuck and tried too hard to play up the pregnant and helpless act. What’s her motive, you ask? Let’s rewind for a minute.

To no one’s surprise, Tag (Liev Schreiber) and Merritt had been having an affair, and unfortunately, this affair resulted in a pregnancy. This is a problem for the Winbury kids not because their father cheated and their family dynamic is fucked up, but because they’re set to receive their trust funds when the youngest child turns 18. At the time of the wedding, Will (Sam Nivola), the youngest, is approaching 18, so all the siblings are counting on that trust fund money coming in soon. However, if Tag has another child, they all have to wait another 18 years. That simply won’t do for Abby, who really wants a new apartment. It’s that urgent for her, and her idiot husband, Thomas (Jack Reynor), definitely isn’t gonna make that happen without his trust fund.

Thomas attempted to threaten Merritt into getting an abortion, and he even brought his grandfather’s guns out to the beach where Merritt was sitting, but his GF on the side, Isabel (Isabelle Adjani), stopped him. So, Abby stepped in and drugged Merritt by crushing up pills — including ones from Amelia’s mother’s pill box that Thomas had stolen for “prescription roulette” — and mixing them with orange juice. She then took Merritt into the water and drowned her.

Abby is ultimately found guilty and arrested at the Winbury estate, sooo, her plan backfired.

Do Amelia And Benji Break Up In Perfect Couple?

Yes, thank god. It’s pretty obvious from the first episode that they’re not exactly soulmates. Amelia has serious doubts about the wedding, doesn’t fit in with the Winburys at all, and doesn’t seem to feel particularly sexually attracted to Benji. You get the sense that she’s only going through with the wedding for her terminally ill mother, like Merritt suggests.

Not to mention, Amelia realizes that she has feelings for Benji’s bestie, Shooter (Ishaan Khattar). Even though he’s just as loaded as Benji, Amelia finds it easy to connect with him over values and on an emotional level. However, she doesn’t end up with Benji either. At the end of the show, Amelia decides that she needs to heal from the tragedy and find herself, so she chooses herself.
