These Iconic National Anthem Fails Give Me Chills (In a Bad Way)

land of the free, home of the (too) brave celebs who now regret singing that damn song

Unfortunately, Ingrid Andress’ brutal rendition of the national anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby has gone viral. After people online started joking that she finally freed Fergie, the country singer explained what happened — and it turns out, it wasn’t nerves or lack of talent. “I’m not gonna bullshit y’all,” she said in a tweet. “I was drunk last night.” Ingrid shared that she’ll be checking herself into a facility to get the help she needs, and she apologized to MLB and all the fans. “I’ll let y’all know how rehab is, I hear it’s super fun,” she quipped. Wishing her all the best!!

Singing the national anthem in front of thousands of people at major sporting events is not for the weak, and Ingrid is far from the first to flop. In fact, she joins a long list of celebrities who will always be haunted by their own renditions because of their ~creative~ singing style choices or embarrassing moments of forgetfulness. I imagine the words “The Star-Spangled Banner” or “national” or “anthem” are triggering for many of these famous folks.

I hope you’re feeling (kind of) patriotic: Here are the worst national anthem fails of all time.

TBH, I really feel for Ingrid and her team right now. Her tweet definitely explains the cursive, pitchy situation.

Steven Tyler

He said, “By the dawn’s early Liiieeeetttt!” And we have to respect him for that passion. Admittedly, the “red glare” part gives me nightmares.

Roseanne Bar

Me when I think I deserve to be world famous, but this is what I sound like when I’m home alone and singing in the kitchen.

Rachel Platten

This is her fight song. Take back her life song. Prove them all right sooooong. Except she low-key forgot the most obvious words… multiple times.

Carl Lewis

Carl said it best himself: “Uh oh!” Fortunately for those of us who like to giggle, he definitely did not know his limitations. Being delulu does occasionally have consequences, I suppose.

Fergie

I’ve never related to Steph Curry or Jimmy Kimmel so much in my life. Thank you queen for making that bannER-ER Yet-ET waaaayyyyavvvee and gifting us millions of memes that still make me guffaw six years after this historic event.

Maya Rudolph

I’m aware this is a skit, but Maya worked hard to deserve a slot on my super important list… her comedic version is strikingly similar to some of these real ones.

Jesse McCartney

Oh, Jesse. My multi-talented millennial king was made for singing “Beautiful Soul,” not the national anthem, but he gave it his all! Who needs all the words anyway?
