Move Over, Meryl: Unpacking Travis Kelce’s ‘Grotesque’ Acting Debut

Somehow Travis Kelce made blitzing from the 50-yard line to the silver screen look way too easy. I mean, touring the world as Mr. Taylor Swift definitely didn’t hurt. Still, an active NFL MVP landing a primetime TV role is far from typical casting. Which actually makes sense considering the word “typical” is not one that appears in Ryan Murphy’s dictionary (Jessica Lange does, several times, in case you were curious). The latest addition to Ryan’s American Horror Story empire is an equally as creepy murder mystery called Grotesquerie. The series follows Niecy Nash-Betts (a detective with a drinking problem) who is tasked with solving a string of murders with the help of a nosey nun. Travis plays nurse Eddie Laclan, who meets Niecy Nash’s Lois while visiting her husband in the hospital. Eddie is an ally and sort-of love interest of Lois’ (he calls her “oddly beautiful, so I guess that’s a compliment). While his character’s fate is still up in the air, I’m calling it now that “Fast Eddie” will inadvertently serve as Lois’ key to solving the murders and will probs die in order to save her.

Travis shows up in episode 3 when Lois is visiting her husband in a coma in the hospital. Travis flirts with Lois and tells her not to drive drunk, but she doesn’t listen. Without dropping any major spoilers, Nurse Eddie helps Lois out of a jam and becomes someone she trusts by episode 4. Is a Niecy Nash-Betts/Travis Kelce sex scene OTW? While we can’t be sure at the moment, I’m certainly sat to find out.

Is Travis Kelce good at acting in Grotesquerie?

As all the best critics say, art is subjective, but Travis’ co-star Niecy Nash told him he should be “so happy with [his] work in this.” Travis and his legend of a mom Donna have become “[her] folks” after their collaboration. As someone who has seen too many NFL commercials, Travis’ performance is certainly a step up from his State Farm performance, though an Emmy nod for his FX run is certainly TBD.
