As a mother and a daughter, I can say Mother’s Day is a fucking minefield. Moms take care of everyone 365 days a year and an acrylic heart with a lame quote written on it doesn’t say, “Thank you for literally giving me life.
After my husband gave me a coffee maker for my first Mother’s Day, I decided my controlling nature would never leave the holiday to chance again. I encourage all people who get celebrated on Mother’s Day to be crystal clear about what exactly they want because it’s better than feeling inwardly disappointed on a day that’s supposed to be about you. This completely avoidable situation has resulted in me acting like a psychopath, but hey, that’s the charm of me!
Admittedly, moms can be hard to find gifts for. I generally shop with three questions in mind: Will she actually use it? Can she eat it (food is always a safe bet)? Is it a luxury she wouldn’t buy herself? The “luxuries” don’t even have to be expensive — maybe it’s a cute sweatshirt to make her daily sweats feel a little more put together or a coffee mug that will make her smile even if cereal gets thrown all over the floor at breakfast.
Presents aside, there are generally two types of moms on Mother’s Day — ones who want total togetherness and ones who want to be left the hell alone. In addition to something wrapped with a bow, giving Mom a mental break will also score you some major brownie points.
