Are divorce rings the new It Girl accessory? Emily Ratajkowski posted some new bling on her Instagram Tuesday morning: her former engagement ring turned into two new ring styles. Separating the diamonds is a satisfying metaphor for her 2022 divorce from Sebastian Bear-McClard.
Divorce rings are exactly how they sound: a ring to mark the personal growth that a divorce drags you through. Some repurpose old engagement rings or wedding bands, while others will use them as an excuse to buy something new and shiny. While divorce rings aren’t exactly a new trend, lord knows that where EmRata goes, the masses will follow.
“The rings represent my own personal evolution,” EmRata told Vogue. “I don’t think a woman should be stripped of her diamonds just because she’s losing a man.”
The inspiration behind repurposing the ring came from Stephanie Danler’s essay “The Unravelers” in The Paris Review, which includes a story of a ring that is made up of different stones from her grandma’s various marriages. (It’s giving The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.) “I loved the idea of a ring unabashedly representing the many lives a woman has lived,” she said.
But the true inspo? Rihanna’s pinky-toe. “I was very inspired by Rihanna’s diamond pinky-toe ring — I liked the idea of my former wedding ring ending up on my pinky.”

EmRata worked with the designer behind her former engagement ring, which was made up of a pear-shaped diamond and a princess-cut diamond with platinum and 18-karat yellow gold settings. “Using the pear-shaped diamond as a pinky ring gave it real oomph,” the designer Alison Chemla told Vogue. “For the princess cut, we wanted to make it feel like a larger stone, so we added two trapezoid stones on either side.”
Besides being really fucking beautiful, the rings acted as an emotional symbol to EmRata — “Some kind of token or evidence of my life becoming my own again.” Good for you, Glen Coco!
