It’s a new era for New York! On June 24, Zohran Mamdani won the NYC mayoral Democratic primary, pulling off a major upset against the political establishment’s creepy mascot, Andrew Cuomo. Zohran ran on the groundbreaking (only groundbreaking in the same way florals are groundbreaking for spring) notion that people want to be able to afford to live. What a concept!

Affordable housing, free childcare, accessible public transit… It’s all in Zohran’s very appealing vision of New York’s new era. And by his side for it is his incredibly cool wife, Rama Duwaji. They shared a sweet moment on stage during Zohran’s victory speech, and Rama shared her love for her hubby in an Instagram post celebrating his win, with the caption, “couldn’t possibly be prouder.”

In May, Zohran also posted about Rama in response to some trolls. He wrote, “Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk’s office. Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race—which should be about you—about her.”

He also wrote, “Rama isn’t just my wife, she’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.”

How did Zohran Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, meet?

Rama is from Damascus, Syria, and then lived with her parents in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for a little while. Then, in 2021, she moved to New York, which is where she met Zohran. Like any good young millennial couple, Zohran and Rama met on a dating app… Hinge, to be specific.

After dating for a couple of years, they got engaged in October 2024, which Zohran announced with an Instagram post, again like any good young millennial.

Zohran and Rama had an engagement and Nikkah (Islamic wedding ceremony) celebration in Dubai in December 2024, and then got officially married at the City Clerk’s office in New York in early 2025.

You can see some of the decor from Zohran and Rama’s Dubai celebration on their wedding planner’s IG. But Zohran also shared some gorgeous photos of their New York elopement on his Instagram.

In honor of their nuptials, Zohran and Rama did a photo shoot on the subway, which seems absolutely on brand for the possible future Mayor and First Lady of New York.

After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BFA in communication design, she began pursuing a career in illustration and animation. According to her website, Rama “examines the nuances of sisterhood and communal experiences” through her art, and she’s worked with a bunch of high-profile clients like The New Yorker, The Washington Post, BBC, Apple, Spotify, VICE, and the Tate Modern. As Zohran said, Rama’s got quite an impressive resumé herself.
