Okay, I know a little while back I begged us all to give up on the “loud breakup” trend on TikTok — but as it turns out, I don’t know anything because if you’re looking to create a following on the app and relate to your audience, this is apparently the best way to do it. Every year, the dating app Bumble releases research they’ve conducted on their users in order to figure out what dating trends for the upcoming year will be like. To look ahead to 2025, they surveyed about 40,000 Gen Z and millennial users around the world and found that things like “get ready for a date with me,” live-streamed breakups (I didn’t even know people did this), and hard launch videos resonated super well with those in the dating pool.

Turns out, people really like authenticity (go figure) — so much so that 41% of the singles who were surveyed said that they really appreciate it when they see relationship content that doesn’t just focus on the highs. We all know dating includes a lot of lows, and people respond to creators being open and honest about disappointments and dating duds. So if your date was so bad you just have to tell someone about it, I suggest telling the internet.

The Rise Of Dating GRWM Videos And The Loneliness Epidemic

It’s not just that this content is entertaining, watching honest dating videos from everyday people is bridging a huge loneliness gap that women are feeling. Bumble reported that 42% of women are watching this kind of content and feeling less self-conscious because of it. They’re finding people to relate to, experiences they can find comfort in, and a community they can commiserate with (and of course, celebrate the little dating joys with, few as they may be). It’s this very relatability that’s keeping the hope alive for all the singles out there. According to Bumble, one in three respondents were fans of both realistic and positive dating content because it helped make them feel optimistic about the future of their own love lives. And here I was thinking that we were all in the same shitty, pessimistic boat.

I mean, it’s why Carrie Bradshaw had a successful column and why I’m currently employed — sex and dating will forever be one of the most confusing, entertaining, relatable, and exciting content out there. So next time you’re getting dressed for that first date with that random you met off of Bumble, you might want to consider grabbing that ring light, taking out your phone, and hitting record.
