Our world can be pretty obsessed with sex — and this is coming from a sex writer herself. That’s why I love what I do. There’s a lot of really damaging and just plain ole’ overwhelming information about sex out there, and I like being able to write stuff that’s easy to follow and steers away from ideas about shame. But I don’t just like catering to the freaks and sexperts of the world (even though I love you all) — I want to include the newbies too! Because let’s face it: Coming to the internet as a virgin can be a pretty upsetting experience — especially when you feel like everyone else got on the intercourse train years ago. We often think virginity (though outdated as a concept it is) is specifically for younger people who are exploring sexual experiences for the first time, but it applies to fully-fledged adults, too.

There are plenty of people who are waiting to have sex — and not all of them are doing so for religious reasons. Some people just haven’t met someone they’d want to sleep with. I mean, it is bleak out there. And others, well, they’re just not too pressed to start having sex.

But say you have finally met someone and are ready to do the deed. Having sex for the first time as a teenager is one thing — gearing up to lose your virginity in your twenties, thirties, or even older is super intimidating. So, instead of digging through some really scary, intense stuff on the internet (hello, PornHub), here are some surefire sex positions for your first time.

Dream Sex Position

It’s your first time, sure, but that doesn’t mean all props are off the table. Get a chair and have either you or your partner place both knees on top of the chair so that they’re facing the back and placing their hands on the back of the chair. Then, the other person should spread their legs apart (a little more than shoulder-width apart) and get behind whoever is on the chair. This is a low-lift move that still feels much more exciting (and comfortable) than just having sex standing up.

Worship Sex Position

Because who doesn’t want to feel worshiped when they have sex? Again, we’re going to need a prop, but this time, it’s a table (or just a really high bed). One of you should get on your knees and get into a child’s pose with your nose touching the ground (as if you were bowing down to someone). Then, you or your partner enter from behind, standing up. This is like an elevated (literally) version of doggy style.

Titanic Sex Position

Reverse cowgirl is a good move to have in your arsenal for sex because a lot of its variations can be super fun — including “Titanic.” One of you should be on your back, with your knees bent. Then, the other should get on top of them, facing the other person’s knees and using them for support.

Amateur Sex Position

This one is aptly named, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be enjoyable. This is pretty close to a simple doggy style, except you want to use an armchair or be close to the headboard of a bed. Instead of putting your hands down in front of you, hold onto the back of the armchair or the bed headboard while sitting on your knees. Then, have the other person sit on their knees with their torso straight up, grabbing your hips from behind. It’s easy, it’s sexy, and it’ll feel really good.

Missionary (With A Pillow)

It’s your first time — of course, I’m going to suggest some missionary! A lot of times, people throw missionary out the window because it’s so common that they just lump it into the not-so-exciting category. But plain ole’ missionary is actually one of my all-time favorite sex positions. It’s super comfortable, feels sexy, and makes me feel really connected to my partner. One way to make the experience even better, though, is to place a pillow under your hip so that your pelvis is elevated and some deeper penetration can happen. You’re welcome.
