Bring Back Kiss Scenes, You Cowards! What ‘Twisters’ Took From Us

We were robbed of a Glen Powell kiss scene for the dumbest reason.

If you’re into hot people eye-fucking for two hours or really anything that gets your adrenaline pumping, Twisters is probably for you. (And if you’re just into anything Glen Powell-related, it’s probably for you too.) Twisters is a modern remake of a classic that came out in the 90s. It’s basically about a meteorologist and a storm chaser, competing to track the same storm, who *SPOILER* totally fall for each other in an enemies-to-lovers kinda, sorta way. You know, because there is no better backdrop for romantic love than a dangerous tornado that is rampaging through towns.

And while the movie itself is actually pretty good (it got an audience score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes) there is already some controversy surrounding a particular scene. And by controversy, I mean that the horny romantics of the world (including me, of course) are pissed that Twisters doesn’t have a kiss scene in the end — even though a behind-the-scenes clip of the two main characters kissing on set went viral. SO WE KNOW IT EXISTS!!!

If you still haven’t scene Twisters, I suggest closing out this article right now because I’m dropping a major spoiler (or not, if you understand anything about the way romance in movies work). But anyway, surprise surprise at the end of the movie, Glen’s character Tyler Owens is running through an airport to find the weather girl of his dreams, Kate Cooper, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones. (I know! But hey, the movie is technically from the 90s so what do you expect?) And apparently, after they find each other, Kate and Tyler were supposed to kiss. The scene was recorded, people knew about it, etc. etc. There was a lot of buildup around this kiss. And yet when people sat in their local movie theaters to watch said kiss… it never came.

So, why was the Twisters kiss scene cut? Well, there was a lot of character development that went into Kate. While the movie has its moments of romance, it’s also about Kate’s specific relationship to storm chasing and how she’s struggling to find her passion again after experiencing loss. And according to the director of the movie, Lee Isaac Chung, he felt that had their been a kiss at the end rather than the actual ending he chose (her flight is delayed by a storm lol and she doesn’t get on the plane), her journey would have become about the kiss rather than her own personal growth and journey. He also added that audiences have changed since the OG movie was put out, so he felt like the original kiss scene would have been polarizing. And according to Daisy, apparently the note came from Steven Spielberg. Hard to argue with Spielberg… and yet, I’ll try!!

Listen, I am all for depicting and drawing attention to a woman’s own story rather than just linking her romantically to someone else. We are fans of the Bechdel test in this household! But feminists like being kissed too, okay? And the movie is already romantic. They find love while trying to survive literal tornadoes. So even though I am not a filmmaker with movies that were shown at the Cannes Festival, I don’t think I’m too far off by saying I don’t believe Kate’s character would have been diminished by a kiss. Couldn’t they have ran off into the next tornado after a little smooch? Can women not have their own plot lines and still get the hot man to kiss them? Also, I’m sorry but how are you going to have a classic airport scene where someone is going after the love of their life and not include the big dramatic kiss when he gets to her just in time? And most importantly, why would we not want to see some Glen Powell kissing action?! So many questions that will have to go unanswered.

Thankfully, I’m not alone in my reaction. People who saw Twisters took to Twitter (still never calling it X) to share their very passionate, hilarious takes on the lack of a kissing scene in the movie. And it almost makes up for not having the scene at all. Almost.
