‘Building The Band’ Isn’t The First Singing Competition Conor Has Been On

Even music competition shows need a healthy dose of drama, so thank you, Conor Smith, for feeding us Building the Band viewers. The Midnight Till Morning band member (who’s been dubbed “Temu Harry Styles” on TikTok) is hyper-focused on throwing shade at Soulidified and pursuing a budding relationship with Sweet Seduction’s Alison Ogden. His own band? Definitely not the priority. When Conor’s bandmates asked him to put in some effort, he nearly ditched them and left the show. God forbid he shows up to rehearsals on time!

I sincerely doubt Midnight Till Morning is winning the competition, but hey, at least Conor’s earned the title of No. 1 male villain on the show. The moody, tattooed Aussie is a fascinating reality TV character with layers like an onion. In addition to his band tension and Alison drama, he was apparently on The Voice? Oh, and he’s been actively channeling different Harry Styles eras for years. I did a necessary deep dive: Here’s everything to know about Building the Band‘s Conor Smith, from his days on The Voice to the Harry Styles comparisons and his love life drama.

Building The Band Star Conor Smith: The Voice, Harry Styles Comparisons, Alison Drama

Building The Band Conor Smith On The Voice Australia

I, for one, was not aware of Conor’s past life on The Voice Australia! The Building the Band star appeared on the eighth season of the show in 2019 when he was just 16 years old. Conor auditioned for The Voice with “I’m on Fire” by Bruce Springsteen and later sang Madonna’s “Ray of Light.”

In his “artist spotlight” video, Conor revealed that his mom actually sent in the audition tape, and he just went with it. When asked about his favorite artists, he said that he loves Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. “My music taste… I was born in the wrong era, I think,” Conor said. Sir, be so for real.

Is Building The Band‘s Conor Smith Copying Harry Styles?

To anyone who’s remotely familiar with Harry Styles, it’s fairly obvious that Conor’s ~very inspired~ by him. (Please see the long hair and hat above, plus his look on Building the Band.) One Building the Band fan on TikTok posted a clip of Conor with the caption, “Anyone else think Conor from Building the Band is just a harry styles wannabe?” The video has more than 62k likes. Harry fans weighed in in the comments: “Yes and it pisses me off sm,” one person said. Another added, “this is like harry styles from temu.”

There’s actually a clip of Conor performing 1D’s “Best Song Ever” at a show last September, and I gotta say… He seems really in his element. I dare say he may need to explore a new aesthetic to differentiate himself from Harry a bit.

In episode 6, we found out that Conor was falling madly in love with Alison, the Regina George of the show. “I had a very lovely night,” he told his band. “We spent a lot of time talking about our emotions. We may have kissed. We went to bed at 5 am.” His bandmate, Mason, asked him to focus on their next performance and Conor agreed. Buttt, he then showed up to rehearsal late and unprepared.

When they had a band meeting about the tricky situation, Mason asked Conor to stop hanging out with Alison because it was causing “drama” in the band. Shane chimed in, “I feel betrayed by someone I thought was my brother.”

Conor replied, “I get where you’re coming from of course. But from the get-go, it was one of those situations that was so deep and I have no regrets with how I acted.” He added, “With all that’s happened, me continuing this, there’s always going to be tension. I don’t think I can continue on.” They eventually figured it out, and Conor agreed to prioritize the band more.
