For those of us who belong to the Church of Pop Culture, today is the most important holiday of the year: the MTV VMAs. The thrilling, chaotic award show celebrates pop girlies (plus pop fellas Shawn Mendes and Benson Boone this year), juicy drama, and yes… eccentric fashion. From Britney Spears wearing a literal 7-foot python in 2001 to Miley Cyrus’ infamous 2013 teddy bear costume, there have been some pretty iconic VMAs fits over the years, and now, we can add the 2024 looks to the history books.

Personally, I was most excited to see what gen z main pop girls Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter brought to the red carpet. After all, the Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl herself has been known to serve cunt in a variety of impressive drag looks — we’ve recently seen her as Lady Liberty, a sexy nurse in a yellow and teal set, and a swan queen complete with gorgeous white feathers and blonde curls. And I truly adore our short and sweet blondie’s chic, whimsical, and hyperfeminine style. Needless to say, these girlies did NOT disappoint at the VMAs!

Without further ado, let’s start judging this round of fits, because judging is my favorite activity. (Don’t lie. I know it’s yours too.) Here are the best and worst dressed celebs at the 2024 VMAs, according to my completely objective opinion. You can’t argue with my truth.

Best — Chappell Roan

She’s an icon, she’s a legend, and she is the moment. Chappell once said she “loves looking pretty and scary.” SUCCESS! The one and only Midwestern princess is looking like a goth queen right out of Game of Thrones tonight. I’m obsessed with her terrifying nails and cape.

Worst — Katy Perry

To be fair, I wanted Katy to be a “worst” because of the whole icky Dr. Luke situation and the pop abomination that is “Woman’s World,” but this dress actually does deserve “worst” all on its own. Why is she wearing rags??

Best — Sabrina Carpenter

Breathtaking. Flawless. Sophisticated. Stunning. Sabrina is literally wearing an archived MADONNA dress. It doesn’t get more insane than that.

While I appreciate the obvious nod to Reputation (Taylor’s Version), I can’t condone the overall Irish bagpipe and tablecloth of it all.

Best — Megan Thee Stallion

2024 VMAs host Megan Thee Stallion for the win with a fuck ass bob, a bodysuit, a ginormous skirt, and a dream!! She knows it’s still hot girl summer.

Come on, Shawn, give us nothing! I love me a little “Lost in Japan,” but yeah, I could’ve predicted this softie pop boy would show up in a boring fit.

Not everyone could pull off this bold red dress with cutouts and fringe at the bottom, but Ariel IRL looks like a goddess (as always)! I’m living for the dark red lip and gold jewelry.

This man is full of wisdom… I’ll be saying “Bless up” and “Anotha one” until I die probably. But his wardrobe is not full of the most chic fits. The pink is flattering enough, but this look is a little too close to pajamas for my liking.

Haters will call this a “worst,” but I call it a serve. It’s the VMAs, people! Addison’s taking her new role as an A-list pop girl seriously, and I respect it. Tonight is the night to get a little weird, a little sexy, a little shocking… Bravo, Queen of Diet Pepsi.

What are we doing here, Tyler? Maybe I’m missing the message behind this look, but sneakers, camo pants, and a green T-shirt is, um, a fascinating choice for the VMAs.

Okayyy, Lisa, I see you! We weren’t ready for this nude corset slay, complete with an elegant veil, gloved sleeves, and complimentary soft glam. It’s giving VMAs royalty.

Worst — Lenny Kravitz

The fit isn’t terrible or anything… It’s just painfully on brand. Like, AI could’ve come up with this in three seconds if you asked it to predict Lenny’s VMAs ensemble.

Listen, the hair is hairing, the butterfly tattoo is butterfly tattooing, and the red lip is red lipping… but the dress is not dressing, I fear. Love the idea of a fiery look to match her fiery vibe, but this just looks like a dress I could find at Target.
