Keeping up with the latest TikTok vernacular could low-key be considered a full-time job (actually, it is my full-time job, now that I think about it). 2025 has just begun, but the latest linguistic It Girl on the main stage is already having a major moment. I’m talking about “this and yap,” of course! If you’re over 50 years old or get your content from Reels (quick q: who hurt you???) then you might have heard the catchy colloquialism for the first time recently, as it’s just officially broken out of the niche internet wormhole that is collectively rotting all of the cool iPad kid’s brains. How do I know “this and yap” has made it mainstream? I heard my dear boomer mother sounding out the phrase as she was scrolling through Netflix, truly confounded by what that sequence of words could possibly mean. Now it only feels right to break down what the meaning of this and yap is, so you have a go-to tool to keep the elders in your life informed.

What does “this and yap” mean?

I’m going to explain it to you like you’re five: this and yap means a situation or experience is perfect for sitting down to enjoy with your friends. Usually, the tagline is used as a caption for an appealing situation presented in a picture or video on social media. For example, if a restaurant posted a shot of their happy hour special (IDK, maybe a dirty martini, Caesar salad, and french fries, perhaps), I would 1000% comment “this and yap” along with tagging my bestie.

Netflix added a “This And Yap” category for some users

The new feature appeared in 2025 for some Netflix subscribers across the country. The section included movies and TV shows that are casual conversation starters where you don’t have to pay attention to every word based on your viewing preferences. Now I’m patiently waiting for this rollout to hit my feed.

You can call them cringe (that’s kinda the point), but I want to be their fifth wheel sooooo bad, especially with a cabana full of ice-cold cockys (those are drinks, Sam).
