What The Hell Are You Supposed To Talk About On The First Date?

Ahh, first dates… a time for nervous excitement, sweet butterflies, and oh-so-awkward silences because you don’t know WTF to talk about.

Okay, first dates can be the absolute worst. You’re at a dinner you probably won’t even enjoy with basically a complete stranger, trying to hide all of the worst parts of yourself while knowing that the person across from you is doing the same, and yet still trying to figure out if they’re the love of your life or a potential new topic you’ll spend six months discussing in therapy. Smell that? That’s romance in the air.

But as inherently uncomfortable as first dates are, there are ways to minimize the silently-staring-at-each-other moments. All it takes is the right conversation starters (and maybe a shot or two).

There’s no science to make sure a first date goes well (and if there is, I definitely haven’t studied it), but if you’re absolutely stuck on what to talk about on a first date, here are some topics to get the conversation flowing and the sparks sparking. Sure, you might not hear wedding bells immediately, but at least you won’t have to hear them loudly and awkwardly swallow their water every 30 seconds. A win is a win.
