Hey Johnny, I Think It’s Time To Go Back To Sex Ed For A Refresher

Isn’t it just lovely when you settle in to indulge in some deliciously bad reality TV, only for some guy to start pushing his peculiar views on contraception onto his caring partner? Yeah, not my idea of a good time either. Now, Love Is Blind isn’t exactly where I go for profound conversations or heartfelt connections, but I was genuinely taken aback by Johnny and Amy’s discussions about birth control. What started as shock quickly morphed into annoyance, then escalated into full-blown rage.

Earlier on in the season Johnny first mentions to Laura (aka a woman who’s not his fiancé) that he and Amy aren’t intimate because she’s not on birth control. Then, when they’re having one of those life-plan convos, Johnny’s all about not wanting kids any earlier than the five-year mark they hashed out. Fair. But when Amy brings up the accidental pregnancy scenario, Johnny’s basically like, “Nah, can’t happen, that’s why you need to get on birth control.” Amy’s clearly uneasy about it, but Johnny keeps pushing, despite claiming he’s not pushing. And… scene.

First of all, how did Johnny, despite being close to his sisters, somehow hit 28 believing all women were on birth control. Seriously? Not only that, but he seemed proud to mention most of his past partners were on it. Congrats, buddy, but no one really gives a fuck.

Let’s talk about birth control for a second. It’s not some casual supplement you pop like a vitamin that just prevents pregnancy without any other effects on your body. It’s a contraceptive method that involves introducing hormones into your system, potentially impacting your weight, skin, mental health, and pretty much everything else. I’ve been on birth control for nine years, and while I’m grateful for its role in preventing pregnancy and balancing my hormones, I wouldn’t have even considered it if I didn’t have PCOS. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not demonizing birth control here. Even if you’re using it solely for contraception, it can be incredibly beneficial. But let’s not downplay the significance of this decision on your body — it’s huge, and it should ultimately be yours alone to make.

Of course, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with not wanting kids or wanting to avoid any accidental pregnancies. Johnny’s concerns about providing for children due to past financial struggles are totally valid. But that’s where family planning comes into play. And if kids aren’t on the agenda, well, there are condoms for a reason, right? Amy hinted at Johnny suggesting condoms weren’t reliable, which is odd considering when used correctly, they’re 98% effective — just 1% less so than the pill when taken consistently. It’s giving Boy Math and frankly I don’t think Johnny is smart enough for this kind of calculation. Honestly, it makes me think he just doesn’t want to use condoms and would rather Amy handle contraception. Eye-roll level? Off the charts.

Also, can we stop for a second? Did I miss something? Does abortion still exist or does Johnny have some seriously backward views on abortion like our not-so-fave Sarah Ann? It’s always baffling how men who know the least about women’s bodies have the strongest opinions about them.

Now, before you rush to defend Johnny’s spiel about not wanting to dictate what Amy does, let’s face facts. Amy seems fine with the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy, Johnny not so much. If that’s his hang-up, he should be the one figuring out contraception that works for them both. And as for his offer to get a vasectomy — why hasn’t he? If Amy’s unsure about birth control but is open to the idea of kids, there’s really nothing left to discuss.

Amy herself mentions how content she is with the regulation in her body. To potentially disrupt that just because YOU (@ Johnny) prefer the birth control route isn’t just manipulative, it’s straight-up villain behavior.
