A word of advice to 20-something-year-old influencers who got famous overnight for a random reason (such as saying “You gotta give ’em that hawk tuah and spit on that thing“: Maybe don’t randomly venture into crypto. It seems Hawk Tuah Girl Haliey Welch has now learned that very crucial lesson. The 22-year-old Talk Tuah podcast host recently attempted to launch a crypto meme coin, the $HAWK token. But just hours after the launch, the coin totally crashed. Haliey was swiftly accused of scamming people out of their money, and on December 19, investors of the coin filed a lawsuit against the coin’s creators, accusing them of illegally advertising and selling crypto that they say wasn’t properly registered with the SEC. Haliey has since responded to the suit with a statement on Twitter (or X, or whatever we’ll calling it these days).

Here’s a breakdown of the Haliey Welcho crypto coin lawsuit and her response.

Burwick Law filed the lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Investors in the coin are seeking more than $150,000 in damages and claiming that the coin was unregistered and illegal. The suit alleges that Haliey’s “extensive social media following” was used to “market the Token as a groundbreaking cryptocurrency project.” The investors are accusing the coin’s creators of “skirting the American securities laws” and making “no serious attempt to restrict purchasers” to international buyers.

The company overHere Ltd., its founder, Clinton So, Tuah The Moon Foundation, and influencer Alex Larson Schultz are all named in the lawsuit. While Haliey herself is not listed as a defendant, she of course promoted the coin on her socials and discussed the project with multibillionaire Mark Cuban during an episode of her podcast.

Haliey Welch’s Response To The Lawsuit

In a December 20 tweet, Haliey wrote, “I take this situation extremely seriously and want to address my fans, the investors who have been affected, and the broader community.” She promised that she’s “fully cooperating” with the legal team representing those who were impacted by the crash. Haliey noted that she wants to “help uncover the truth” and “hold the responsible parties accountable.” At the end of her statement, she included a link for those affected to contact Burwick Law. She notably hasn’t posted anything on her Insta grid since before the coin launched.
