‘RHOC’ Fans: Is Gina Kirschenheiter’s Lack Of Glam Relatable AF Or A ‘Housewives’ Dealbreaker?

After six whole seasons on The Real Housewives, I’ll admit, I’ve come around to Gina, who lived in a casita. She may have started out with a chaotic crash landing in Orange County, but it’s evident over the years how Gina and her relationships (with her ex, the other women, and the audience) have evolved. One thing that hasn’t leveled up, however, is Gina’s aesthetic appeal, and Gina herself is the first to admit it! Ahead of the premiere of season 19, Gina threw on a business casual polka dot top to tell Bravo fans to get hungry… for nothing! At least when it comes to her fashuns. Gina K is causing me to question: is having a killer closet and a glam team still a prerequisite for being a Real Housewife?

On an Instagram live, Gina cheekily told her fans she wanted to “get ahead” of forthcoming criticism by apologizing for wearing a Herschel backpack “ad nauseam” because she doesn’t have the time or desire to indulge in a different bag — all season! Gina also warns that there was “a lack of effort” in her interview look because she was too tired after a cast trip to do her hair and makeup properly. “I’m doing the best I can, guys!” Gina says, but some Bravo stans weren’t having it.

“Another season of boredom and poordom from Gina! Yayyyyyy!!” one user tweeted. “Already bored,” another added, “Guess the ‘aspirational lifestyle’ isn’t part of the HWives criteria anymore.” Still, some of the Bravoverse is here for it: “Gina bitch…she and I have had an interesting ride the last several years, and I’ve come to really appreciate her more and more. After this, I may have to ride for her.”

Let’s be clear: physical looks are off the table, regardless of the job, so no one can fault Gina’s relatable AF body changes. But, when it comes to Bravo, the premise of the network’s programming is the A-word: aspirational, which is an option at any size. Orange County happens to be the OG franchise. In a 2006 press release, Bravo said the show would follow women who “lead glamorous lives in a picturesque Southern California gated community where the average home has a $1.6 million price tag and residents include CEOs and retired professional athletes.”

Now, nearly 20 years later, Housewives has grown from a “riveting series exploring the complicated daily lives of five privileged women and their families.” Gratefully, these female friend groups contain multitudes today; the show benefits from featuring women who aren’t all as mind-warpingly wealthy as Heather Dubrow. Gina’s authenticity, including her financial struggles, is what we call respecting the balance. Today’s audience is quick to cancel a Bravoleb for being tone-deaf, so a pivot away from privilege is only natural. But is cramming a bunch of kiddos into a casita and refusing to put a little razzle-dazzle into her fits too far?

There is something charming about Gina’s low-key lifestyle. Who doesn’t have days (or weeks) where they’d rather chill in sweats? Lazy girl representation matters! Gina’s relationship with Travis (other than external drama) is wholesome AF and cute to watch. Most importantly, when Gina is your friend, you can tell she’s a real one, through and through. I root for her and Emily to stay tight.

But at the same time, it hasn’t escaped me that Gina was originally hired to become the cast’s Long Island Princess. Life took a turn for Gina following her divorce (and the show was more compelling for it), but that doesn’t mean the audience greenlit enough lackluster confessional looks to fill a Vogue magazine (sorry, it’s the André Leon Talley in me!). And, according to Gina, we should only expect worse in 2025 since Gina is now doing her own hair, makeup, and styling. (I’m not saying Jen Pedranti got everything right, but if sacrificing her credit card balance led to that STUNNING confessional glam last season, it’s a vapid decision I have to wholeheartedly support.)

I’m grateful Gina ditched the extensions (remember when she was starting a hair line lol), but the button downs that look like they fell off the clearance rack at Express still look out of place next to RHOA’s opulence. TBF, OC isn’t historically the most fashionable franchise. Vicki didn’t make history by slaying the house down boots, but by bringing OTT extra-ness in other ways, between her trips to PVR, ridiculous theatrics, and bonkers relationships. Maybe if Gina were serving drama elsewhere, if not through her closet, her aesthetic wouldn’t be a noticeable concern.

While the exact numbers are still under wraps, it’s a known fact that most Wives are making thousands (like, sometimes over $25K) per episode. Plenty of jobs have a dress code (raise your hand if you were traumatized by wearing a green apron to serve coffee at 6 a.m.), so is it sooo unreasonable that fans expect well-paid reality TV royalty to dress for the job? If the corporate girlies have to rack their brains for the business casual fits that don’t suck, Gina, who is being paid a pretty penny by Bravo, should care enough to bring it, whatever that looks like to her.

The most important part about being a Housewife is being real, not being rich, so no one’s insisting the working mom stick to Gucci, Gucci, Louis, Louis, Fendi, Fendi, Prada. But still, this ain’t TLC, babe, this is a show about women living their best lives (and I refuse to believe that Gina’s best is this borderline offensive confessional look). I don’t need Gina to fake it with designer, but can’t she make something work — Tim Gunn style?! As a normie with limited funds, I know that an elevated sense of personal style doesn’t have to be a three-dollar sign affair. Plus, Gina has nailed some looks, more often on WWHL than RHOC.

Raise your hand if you’re a California MUA or stylist who is willing to work with Gina for free! Higher, please! Because even in these trying times, and TBH now more than ever, reality TV escapism needs to hit. And on Bravo, it’s fair to say that escapism needs to give me at least a little glam or GTFO!
