I’ve seen a lot of unhinged TV shows in my time, but Netflix’s The Hunting Wives might just take the cake in that department. Between multiple murders, guns everywhere, the Creepy Pastor Pete saga, Margo’s disturbing affair with a teenage boy, toxic husbands galore, and all of the wives cheating on their shit husbands with each other, season 1 is, well, anything but chill and wholesome. And in episode 7, there’s a particularly shocking moment… As a hilarious person on TikTok put it, “Sheriff Peggy has entered the chat!” Yes, I’m speaking of that scene where we see Callie passionately pegging her husband, Sheriff Jonny, as she empowers him to catch Abby’s killer.

Obviously, Callie’s in an on-again, off-again relationship with Margo behind her husband’s back. While we don’t learn as much about Sheriff Jonny, there are definitely some not-so-subtle hints about his sexuality and extramarital activities as well. Sooo, are we looking at a full-on lavender marriage here? (As in, a marriage of convenience to hide their queerness.) Let’s break down that sheriff and Callie scene in The Hunting Wives.

Do Sheriff Jonny And Callie Have A Lavender Marriage?

The ~intimate~ husband-wife moment comes during the “Shooting Star” episode. (BTW, if you don’t know what pegging is, it’s when someone wears a strap-on dildo for anal sex.) At this point, Sophie’s gun has been identified as the murder weapon, and Callie, who despises Sophie, is eager for her husband to go ahead and make that arrest. She doesn’t really GAF that he needs more evidence to do so. As Callie pegs Jonny with a giant pink dildo, she makes him tell her that he’s “the big fucking boss.” And in a chant reminiscent of the 2016 “Lock her up” chants about Hillary Clinton, she urges him, “‘C’mon, catch her. Lock her up, baby. Lock her up!”

Evidently, Callie’s mid-pegging words of encouragement inspire Jonny, and he walks into the police headquarters like a big tough guy determined to get justice for Abby. “What the hell y’all doin’ sitting’ around?!” he shouts at everyone as he arrives. (For the record, Jonny literally sucks at his job, and it’s a woman on the squad, Deputy Wanda Salazar, who does all the meaningful investigative work.) After he yells at all the cops, one of the guys asks, “What’s up his ass?” And another one, with a loving twinkle in his eye, responds, “I don’t know, but I like it.” I guffawed.

That same cop who “likes” the sheriff’s new attitude appears in another intriguing Sheriff Jonny scene, too. When Callie walks into Jonny’s office one day, it seems like she’s interrupting something when that cop is leaning over Jonny from behind, and they’re so close that they appear to be touching. “Chet!” Callie says loudly, announcing herself when she enters the room. He mutters “Ma’am,” nervously backing away from Jonny. He rushes off to get the sheriff a coffee. Is this awkward moment a coincidence? I think not. Although we don’t see the sheriff explicitly having an affair, I’d venture to say that this scene, combined with the pegging scene, is supposed to send us a message. (Yes, straight men can enjoy being pegged too! I’m just looking at all the context here.)

I think Sheriff Jonny and Callie are definitely in a lavender marriage, but I suppose they could also just be bisexual cheaters. Anything’s possible in this show, truly.
