On the 10th anniversary of Gossip Girl in August 2017, executive producer of the show Joshua Safran told Vanity Fair what the stans already knew: “Blake and Leighton were not friends.” I do appreciate the bluntness here. He noted, “They were friendly, but they were not friends like Serena and Blair.” According to Joshua, there weren’t any major conflicts between the actresses — they’re just two different people. “Blake is very much in the moment,” he explained. “Blake knows what’s happening. You talk to Blake on a very contemporary level, and she would be like, ‘I’m doing this thing tonight. Have you been to this restaurant?'” I’m not totally grasping how this “in the moment” character trait would cause a rift…

Joshua claimed that Leighton was “very removed and very quiet.” Apparently, “after her scenes were done, she would wander the stage.” Me, if I was on Gossip Girl. I guess he was trying to make the point Blake is more outgoing and Leighton is more of an introvert, so they weren’t attached at the hip.

But some rumors suggest that the issue was deeper than their opposite social batteries. In a 2008 article, New York Magazine reported that Blake and Leighton were said to “avoid each other like the plague” on set, and their castmates felt like they had to “choose sides” at the time.
