A few days ago, I was enjoying my usual late night scroll when I stumbled upon this video from TikTok creator Sophia James. “If you’re watching this video, you’re in group 7,” she announced, explaining that she posted seven videos to see which one would get the most reach. Sophia’s a musician and was using this method to promote her song, “So Unfair.” (Kind of a bop, for the record.)

I liked the TikTok, giggled at some of the generous interpretations in the comments, and went about my scroll sesh. But next thing I know, every fucking video on my FYP is about group 7. One thing about the people of TikTok? They love a bit and they love community. One dude pointed out in his own video: “I love how we just open this app, and someone’s like, ‘You’re in group 7.’ And we create a community, and I know nobody in this community, but I still feel so connected to each and every one of those baddies in group 7.” Same, Andrew.
