After eight years of dating, Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have officially called it quits. And they were one of my favorite random celeb couples, so I’m gonna be taking a few business days to process this upsetting news.

The Materialists star and the Coldplay singer were last seen together just a few weeks ago in Malibu, and Dakota also recently joined Chris in India when he was on tour there. Although there were breakup rumors back in August, Dakota’s rep shut them down at the time, claiming that Dakota and Chris were still “happily together.”

These two kept their relationship fairly private (they never even posed together on a carpet!) but occasionally opened up about each other in interviews over the years. “We’ve been together for quite a while, and we go out sometimes, but we both work so much that it’s nice to be at home and be cozy and private,” Dakota shared with Elle in December 2021. “Most of the partying takes place inside my house.”

On June 4, multiple sources confirmed to People that Chris and Dakota’s on-off romance has come to an end. One of the sources noted that the breakup “feels final this time” and just left it at that… I so appreciate all the details.

Fortunately, another insider offered more of an explanation to The Daily Mail. They shared, “Their relationship has been over for a long time, they just haven’t been able to figure out to make it official. Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much.” (Chris welcomed two kids with his ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow: Apple and Moses Martin. Truly iconic names.)

The Daily Mail source claimed that “little things just kept adding up to where they weren’t right for each other anymore” and emphasized, “Dakota is devastated that she isn’t going to be around his kids as much anymore.”

A source who spoke with The Sun about Dakota and Chris’s split said the age gap was a significant problem in their relationship — Dakota is 35, and Chris is 48. (That’s actually so tame for Hollywood age gaps.) “They really tried to work through their issues but the age gap was often a problem and she’d expressed that she may want children in the future, whereas Chris is kind of done with that part of his life,” the insider explained, adding, “It’ll be hard for both of them to move on after such a long relationship but they will do it.”

Apparently, Dakota and Chris were quietly engaged before they broke up. While the actress and the singer never formally announced this step in their relationship, a source told People in March 2024 that they’d been engaged for “years” but were in “no rush to get married.” Dakota first sparked engagement rumors in December 2020 when she was spotted wearing a large emerald ring on her left hand.
