We’re at the start of yet another Donald Trump presidency, so can we all stop pretending that someone’s politics is as superficial as their favorite color? To quote the slogan for the feminist movement in the 60s, “The personal is the political.” And pretending that the way someone aligns politically is separate from who they are as a person is not only naive but complicit. So if you’re someone who has playfully swatted at your partner for saying something absolutely egregious about another group of people or, even worse, pridefully participated in the “going to cancel out his vote” trend, I’m looking at you… and judging you hard.

So if, for some reason, you have a boyfriend and haven’t touched on politics at all (congrats on the privilege, BTW!), there’s still time to stop pretending to be blissfully unaware and actually stand on business. Here are some political questions to ask your boyfriend (that you probably should’ve asked, I don’t know, right when you met them) so you can tell if he’s a piece of shit or not.

1. COVID was so crazy… did you ever get vaccinated for that?

2. Wow, there was a mixup and I ended up getting a free lunch… how does the concept of “free lunch” make you feel?

3. Wow it’s unseasonably warm… why do you think that is?

4. Ugh my landlord just raised my rent… do you have the urge to defend him?

5. If we had a baby, what would you name them: Ruth (Bader Ginsburg) or Ronald (Reagan)?

6. If I didn’t want to have little Ruth or Ronald… how would you feel?

7. If you found out your boss made 400 times your salary, would you simply “work harder” or set something on fire?

8. What’s your stance on the ‘tip screen’ at coffee shops? Answer carefully.

9. Do you think bright red hats make a good accessory?

10. What’s your plan if there’s a zombie apocalypse: build a community or hoard supplies?

11. Does someone saying “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” make you enraged?

12. So Elon Musk… scary super nerd or your inspiration?

13. Which one is worse: pineapple on pizza or billionaires existing?

14. Don’t you love a sale? Like 100% off college tuition?

15. If you had to abolish one, would it be the police or the concept of bottomless brunch?

16. Do you think there was ever a time period when America was “great”? When was that exactly?

17. Do you believe Taylor Swift is a government psyop?

18. If you had to pick a side, are you more Succession or Schitt’s Creek?
