Italy has made a very Mediterranean impression on the 2024 Paris Olympics, and I’m not just talking about the fact that one of their gymnasts is sponsored by Parmesan Reggiano. Italian swimmer Thomas Ceccon has couch-bound spectators around the globe googling “how to get passport overnight” and “direct flight Ceccon Villa Thomas bedroom.” If I’m going to endure an era where US swimming doesn’t totally sweep (shoutout to Katie Ledecky for nailing more than her fair share), at least I’m also kind of winning with memes of Thomas and his Michaelangelo-drawn torso being sent to my phone. Yes! And… no. While I’m more curious how he looks so angelic even whilst unconscious, the photo that went viral of Thomas sleeping outside during the Olympics had people questioning why he seemed stranded without a bed. The photo was actually taken by Saudi Arabian rower Husein Alireza from inside the Olympic Village, where athletes are often spotted resting between events. As someone who needs a nap after writing a single email, pretty obvious why people pushing the physical limits of humanity as we know might need a relaxing outdoor slumber.
