We’re already in the second week of the Paris 2024 Olympics, but don’t think the magic’s over yet. While we may have thought the most romantic thing that could possibly happen was a high jumper dedicating the entire Seine River to his wife or this long jumper running into her coach’s (AKA her husband’s) arms when she cleared trials, I humbly stand corrected. There’s an entire lovers to enemies back to lovers again storyline with a happy ending that the internet is freaking out about and for good reason.
Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac were exes who broke up before the Olympics. Unfortunately, that couldn’t change the fact that they were set to compete as a partner duo in mixed doubles at the Paris Olympics. So, despite their break up, they were forced to work together through their issues and did such a good job of it they actually won gold. New Olympic couples therapy alert?! It’s actually unclear whether Katerina and Tomas are back together but inquiring minds (everyone in my group chat) want to know. Here’s a breakdown of Siniakova and Mahac, the Olympic exes who won gold, to make you believe in ~love~ again.

Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac are champion tennis players from the Czech Republic who competed as partners for the mixed doubles at the 2024 Olympic games in Paris. As fate would have it, the exes won the gold in the mixed doubles event.

Want some bonus lore on top of their romcom in the making? The exes/doubles partners ousted Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen of China on the path to gold. Well, Zhang Zhizhen is one of Tomas Mahac’s go-to doubles partners and together they’ve won previous grand slams. You (almost) couldn’t write a love triangle this good. Katerina has previously played same-sex doubles with Coco Gauff.

French press confirmed Katerina and Tomas were together for four years before breaking up in July, right before the Olympics started. They caught the world’s attention when they arrived in Paris, and Katerina Siniakova announced her relationship status with her mixed doubles partner Tomas was romantically canceled (when it looks like the truth might actually be a little closer to it’s complicated).

On the podium to accept their award, Katerina and Tomas shared an intimate hug/kiss situation (I know they’re European but come on they’re still exes) which made it seem like maybe they’d winning off the court, too.

After their win, when reporters asked if they were back together, Katerina hit the press with a mischievous line: “That’s our personal life, so you don’t need to know that. We like when you are confused.” Tomas followed up her coy sentiment with “This is top secret.” This naturally inspired lots of speculation from the at-home matchmakers on X that proclaimed the couple’s love story could not possibly be over. If it doesn’t work out IRL, I think we need a movie to cement the fantasy. I’m still workshopping titles but Falling For Gold sounds pretty good, right?
