The ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 3 Update I’ve Been Impatiently Waiting For Is Finally Here

Raise your hand if Reese Witherspoon, Nicole “I Am Babygirl” Kidman, Zoe Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley pushing a bad man down the stairs permanently changed your neural pathways. *Author’s note: my hand is raised. If that was a spoiler, you’re about seven years late to the Big Little Lies party, but don’t worry it’s still just as much of a thrilling masterpiece with that little tidbit in mind. And, lucky for us diehard fans, the party is still set to keep going. Everyone has a little Elle Woods in us, but none more than Reese Witherspoon. Elle’s gossip girlie nature has led Reese to tease us here and there with the exciting new projects she’s working on (like a Hello Sunshine collab with Real Housewife Kyle Richards). Even more excitedly Reese has confirmed the buzz around the next season of Big Little Lies season 3 is stronger than ever. Here’s the Big Little Lies season 3 update that’s going to heal the world (I hope).

When is Big Little Lies season 3 coming back?

Big Little Lies season 3 is still far off from debuting on TV: Expect it no sooner than late 2026 based on typical TV production schedules, at the very earliest. Reese Witherspoon shared with E! News on October 5, 2024, that the material for Big Little Lies season 3 is currently being written by the OG book’s author Liane Moriarty. She said that she and fellow co-star Nicole Kidman (who, like Reese, is also an executive producer on the project) are waiting for pages from Moriarty which “should be turn[ed] in very soon”. This comes after Nicole Kidman hinted in June 2024 that the path to s3 was already “fast and furious.”

Once the source material is hopefully in before the end of this year, a writers’ room could begin in 2025. If the gang really hustles, production could quickly follow for a late 2026 air date (less texting, more clocking in for work pls). Yet, to adapt MLK Jr.’s words, the arc of the Hollywood universe is long but it bends towards award-winning content. So 2027 feels like a much safer bet.

Reese also spilled that the third season of BLL is “going to get back to the original characters” and their children who should be “a little bit older.” From Reese’s repeated emphasis on the word “original,” it could mean that unlike season 2 (which introduced a completely new main antagonist in Meryl Streep), the next season will instead focus on continuing the story solely based on the freshman characters (Madeline, Celeste, Renata, Bonnie, and Jane). Does that mean we’ll get Alexander Skarsgard’s sexy satanic ghost? Probs not, but a girl can dream. Who knows, maybe Reese’s mini-me could make a super cute cameo instead.
