When, pray tell, did it become unacceptable to rock a witty accessory at your Coachella afterparty? I personally wasn’t aware that this is a strict no-no, but people on X are up in arms after Charli XCX dared to wear a cheeky sash at her own party. The controversial sash in question reads: “Miss Should Be Headliner.” (Green Day was the actual headliner for the first Saturday of the music festival.) Apparently, thousands of people are offended by this suggestion. God forbid a woman recognizes her own tremendous talent and cultural impact, IG! Thousands of Charli haters/Green Day stans are coming out of the woodwork and using this damn sash as an excuse to say awful things about the “360” singer… It’s a stressful day for the angels. Here’s a full breakdown of the Charli XCX Coachella sash controversy.

Charli XCX Coachella Sash Controversy, Explained

Why Are People Mad At Charli XCX For Wearing A Sash?

Sooo, it’s giving misogyny. She’s also being called a “spineless coke addict” and “rude and bitchy,” among other mean and ridiculous things. These hateful tweeters need to be so for real… Charli obviously references drugs in her hyper-pop music about clubbing, but she’s never appeared high in an interview or on stage. This woman takes her career and artistry extremely seriously — she only had this major BRAT breakthrough after more than a decade of grinding. If you perceive Charli as an addict who relies on autotune, her artistry is going way over your head, and it’s not meant for you.

And yes, Green Day is a political band, and during their Coachella set, they changed the lyrics of “Jesus of Suburbia” to reflect the Israel/Palestine war. But, news for the haters: Charli’s political, too. LOL, remember when she tweeted three words (“Kamala is brat”) and singlehandedly gave the Harris campaign an effective brand and a youthful, inspiring feel? The TikTok “360” Harris edits will be shown in U.S. history lessons years from now, and Charli’s not even American. Not to mention, she’s a vocal ally of the LGBTQ+ community, championing and working with queer artists, and empowering her queer fanbase.

Listen, I appreciate “Wake Me Up When September Ends” as much as the next white person, but Charli deserves that headliner slot just as much as Green Day does. They both have about 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify and super passionate fans. Even if you don’t think she deserved it, it’s just. A. Sash. There’s a lot going on in the world to be pissed about right now. When it comes to Charli and her sash, let’s chill TF out.
