“Die With A Smile” Proves Lady Gaga Is So Back In Her ‘Joanne’ Era

Jackson Maine would definitely approve

At long last our national nightmare is over: we the people have brand new Gaga to get hold us over until LG7 drops!! As with all of the best artists of our time, Lady Gaga is a true chameleon who perfects little monster energy no matter what corner of the universe her latest project takes her loyal listeners to, so I truly had no idea what to expect when “Die With A Smile” was announced. But it feels like this swoon-worthy collab with short king Bruno Mars is actually a little bit of a return to a previous Gaga era that is personally one of my absolute favorites: The One and Only Joanne (older sister of Ally Maine). Like many of Ally’s painfully blissful duets with Jackson, “Die With A Smile” is an oral delight. It sounds like the first lick of a soft serve cone while walking on the boardwalk under a summer sunset tastes. I didn’t know I needed to hear Bruno and Gaga (two of the greatest vocalists of our generation) harmonizing about love like cornballs, but apparently, I did! Gaga belting the phrase “I don’t even want to do this anymore” is reason enough to have this song stuck in my head for the rest of summer (I’ll be singing that line to myself every time I’m forced to do something I don’t want to and unfortunately that’s a lot). The best part? We got the visuals at the same damn time. Here’s everything to know about Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ new single “Die With A Smile”.

“Die With A Smile” Music Video

In the video, Bruno Mars strums a guitar into the mic while Gaga sings to him from behind a retro keyboard while smoking a cigarette. The story seems to be a simple live music performance for a recording on a ’70s soundstage. They’re both dressed in matching country chic fits that channel Dolly Parton meets Sonny and Cher and yep, that’s it, I’m putting on A Star Is Born.

“Die With A Smile” will not be a part of Lady Gaga’s next album

Reps for the artist told Variety the song is a complete stand-alone single, that isn’t going to be included on Lady Gaga’s forthcoming TBA album, LG7. That doesn’t mean this little ditty isn’t reflective of Gaga’s musical headspace right now, as she has posted she’s recording her highly anticipated seventh studio album as we speak. Country music has been en vogue this year, but trust that if Lady Gaga goes back to Joanne land, it’ll be bigger and better than she’s done before.

Is “Die With A Smile” on the soundtrack of Joker: Folie A Deux?

As far as we know, the single is not at all part of the theatrical ramp-up for Jaoquin’s musical take two of The Joker coming out on October 4, 2024. As Film Twitter has pointed out, the song does seem too thematically on par (with the title and even the music video if you stretch your imagination a little bit) to be completely unrelated, so perhaps it will make an appearance anyway.

How long has it been since Lady Gaga released an album?

It’s been four years (long ones, if you’re asking me) since Stefani Germanotta hit us with a full masterpiece. She did release the theme song for Top Gun Maverick, “Hold My Hand,” which both me and Tom Cruise love to listen to at the end of a hard day’s work in the shower (I presume).
