‘Severance’ Super Fans Have Some Huge Theories About Irving

Nothing but respect for my favorite innie.

Good morning to Hollywood national treasure John Turturro and no one else. One of the best parts of Severance being back on the air is some of my favorite actors gracing our screens, including the Caméra d’Or-award winning actor (that’s a French Oscar, y’all) who keeps things sassy on the MDR floor. During season 1, Iriving had such a unique storyline compared to all of the other innies when he came to his secret romance with Burt, which led to trying to unpack the mysteries hidden in R&D. Now for the second time, Irving has a whole wild journey going on that none of the core four know anything about, or the audience for that matter, at least for now. I dug up all the best Severance season 2 theories about Irving so I can hopefully say I told you so later.

Best ‘Severance’ Theories About Irving

Who was Irving calling about his innie?

In season 2, episode 2, Irving has a very discreet phone call with someone where he reports his innie got the message he covertly shared. Then in episode 5, Irving takes a second phone call where he worries the bad guys (AKA Lumon) are onto his innie figuring shit out. Soooo, who the hell is he reporting to? While I initially thought he was feeding information to the revolution led by Reghabi (the woman who reintegrated Mark and Petey) one creative little Redditor suggested Irving could been talking to Harmony Cobel/Ms. Selvig?!? IDK if Harmony’s loyalties have shifted that far against Lumon, but now that I’m thinking about it, what if he’s talking to someone else I suspect (with zero evidence) HATES Lumon, like perhaps the real Gemma who is secretly in hiding from the company??? Thank me later.

Okay, this one is a pretty brilliant detective work by r/Umgar, I have to say. We all know Irving has been infiltrating his innie’s mind and vice versa since last season (outie Irving painted scenes from inside Lumon that he had no way of knowing about and innie Irving saw that same paint creepily dripping while refining data). Now, some viewers believe this mixed consciousness is happening because Irving has been reintegrated and severed multiple times (he did it voluntarily a second time to execute a vendetta against Lumon), but that’s a whole other theory.

Going back to season 2, Irving’s on a high-key mission to use his innie to uncover the truth about the Montauk Project, which he reports about on the phone calls. So how is he getting his innie specific messages for the cause? By altering the hands of the wristwatch Irving puts on before stepping into the elevator, ofc!! This Redditor even put together that Ben Stiller told fans to pay more attention to what the innies do in the locker room before heading to work i.e. putting on this watch.

How did Irving tell Dylan about the Exports Hall?

Did you think it was weird how Irving, the most sarcastic, cynical employee in the bunch, kept telling Dylan to “hang in there” as the cheesy office poster advised toward the end of episode 4? Fans are speculating that it’s because he hung a secret message for Dylan’s innie to carry out now with Irving’s access revoked after the whole Helena drowning incident.

What do Irving’s old Navy medals have to do with the Montauk Project?

TBH, I’ve been stuck on Irving’s old ass military paraphernalia since season 1 because it made no sense that his outie had a career in the service or that even if he did he would have earned items that dated. My group text has been teasing the bonkers theory that maybe Irving has lived multiple lifetimes as a manipulated creation of Lumon’s repeatedly brought back to life, but other fans have a suspicion the medals belonged to Irving’s dad (or family member). Irving could be avenging his family by exposing whatever the Montauk Project is. Makes sense since the Montauk Project is a real-life government conspiracy theory involving the military.
