Another red carpet, another absolutely timeless slay from Ariana Grande-Butera got the people going. The 2025 Golden Globes red carpet did not disappoint when it came to the celebrity fashuns (thank God) and Ariana’s gold Givenchy shift dress was one of the most talked about looks of the night. Why? Because there were already whispers running through the mean streets of Rodeo Drive that Ariana might have put her hat in the ring to play Audrey Hepburn in a highly anticipated biopic. If you’re asking me, Ariana is an enchanting fit to play my personal favorite fashion icon and acting delight from the Golden Age of Hollywood. So, is Ariana Grande going to play Audrey Hepburn in a movie? Here’s what I found.

Ariana has been leaning into Audrey-inspired looks for some time now (like her white silk wedding dress with a bowed veil) but her recent red carpet appearances have been especially bambi-eyed-bitch coded (complimentary). At the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Ariana’s fringe paired with the styling of her decolletage was screaming modern Audrey.

Then, at the Golden Globes, Ariana wore an archival Givenchy gown with classic opera gloves and a swishy ponytail that was more Funny Face than Dangerous Woman (Nicole Kidman seemed to pick up Ariana’s mega-pony mantle on the red carpet that night). Everyone knows Ms. Hepburn and Givenchy went together so bad back in the day, so if Ari reignites her run as the face of the brand (like she was in 2019) it could be a sign that she’s one step closer to portraying the darling on the big screen.

In January of 2022, Rooney Mara was announced to star in Apple’s forthcoming Audrey Hepburn biopic, which was to be directed by Luca Guadignino (Call Me By Your Name, Challengers, Queer). About two years later, in October 2023, Luca revealed that he was no longer involved with the project, which put the movie’s future into question. However the following February, Rooney confirmed on a film panel that “the project is still very much alive” but she couldn’t “say more than that right now.” The details of what parts of Audrey’s life the movie would cover have yet to be released. Even if Rooney Mara’s movie proceeds, that doesn’t mean there couldn’t be a separate Ariana vehicle created by a different studio and director down the line. I mean, just look at Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi in their two competing Elvis movies, right?
