Is it controversial to say Shawn Mendes’ dating resumé is low-key more interesting than his discography? (That said, I do have a soft spot for his magnum opus, “Lost in Japan.” He laced that song with powerful drugs.) As everyone with a social media presence and a few pop playlists knows, Shawn was allegedly involved in a love triangle with Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello in 2023 — and we (seemingly) got to hear about it when the pop princesses released new music in 2024. In addition to that whole saga, Shawn’s also dated another A-list celeb, a badass activist, and possibly a chiropractor who’s twice his age. This is why I’m convinced he has the potential to make more exciting music. It’s not like there’s a shortage of fascinating material for him to sing about.

Shawn Mendes’ Dating History: Girlfriends, Exes, Today

Shawn and Hailey dating feels like 53 lifetimes ago, but yes, this is a thing that happened. Hailey was first linked to Shawn in 2017 when they were spotted together at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights. In May 2018, they even attended the Met Gala together but denied that they were making their couple debut.

Although Shawn and Hailey never commented on their relationship while they were dating, the “Stitches” singer gave Rolling Stone some tea in November 2018 after they reportedly split.

“I don’t even wanna put a title on it,” he said about their… fling. “I think it was more of a zone of limbo. She’s still one of the fucking coolest people ever — she’s not just a beautiful person visually, but she’s one of the most beautiful hearts I’ve ever met.” He added, “I think I’m an idiot to not, you know …. But you can’t control your heart.”

Camila Cabello

You’d need like six novels to cover the Shawn and Camila story, but here’s the Sparknotes version. The singers became besties in 2014 when they were both openers for Austin Mahomes’ tour (lol). Although they denied dating rumors in the years following, it was pretty obvious that they had romantic chemistry.

Shawn and Camila began publicly dating in July 2019, shortly after they released their sultry duet, “Señorita.” They posted lots of couple content, adopted a Covid puppy named Tarzan, and wrote many, many songs about each other. But in November 2021, they announced their breakup via a joint IG Story statement: “Hey guys, we’ve decide to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as human is stronger than ever ❤️.” They noted that they would “continue to be best friends.” Famous last words.

They gave their romance another try in April 2023 after they had a PDA-filled Coachella reunion, but it didn’t last long the second time. Just two months later, they split again. They still follow each other on Instagram and seem to have a friendly relationship.

The short-lived romance that (presumably) gave us Short n’ Sweet. Shawn and Sabrina first sparked dating rumors in February 2023 when they were spotted going on a walk together in LA. The next month, they left Miley Cyrus’ Endless Summer Vacation album release party together and also hung out at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party.

Then, of course, Shawn reunited with Camila at Coachella in April. In the Short n’ Sweet track, “Coincidence,” Sabrina specifically calls someone out for ditching her for another woman who’s in Palm Springs… which is near Coachella Valley.

During a December 2024 interview with his idol, John Mayer, Shawn seemed to allude to, well, messing up the Sabrina fling. “I’m an impulsive person,” he admitted. “For instance, being with someone two days before seeing your ex and communicating two days before that that you’re going to go hangout with your ex.” Yup, that’s red flag behavior, Shawn.

Dr. Jocelyne Miranda

In February 2023, there were also rumors that Shawn was dating his longtime 50-something-year-old chiropractor, Dr. Jocelyne Miranda. They’ve definitely been seen together a lot, but they’re probably just friends or had a very brief, unserious fling.

Helena Gualinga

This history brings us to the present: Shawn’s rumored to be dating Ecuadorian activist Helena Gualinga. She’s literally an icon who’s dedicated her life to fighting against the extraction of natural resources in the Amazon and working to protect her Kichwa Sarayuku community. (There’s a whole documentary about her!) While neither Shawn nor Helena has officially confirmed that they’re dating, the singer and the activist have been spotted looking super couple-y.
