23 seasons later, American Idol is still keeping me entertained. TBH, I would’ve been thrilled if any of the top three contestants this season took the crown. John Foster is a charming country king, Breanna Nix is an undeniable powerhouse à la Kelly Clarkson, and Jamal Roberts’ smooth vocals are medicine for the soul. After the May 18 three-hour finale, which included performances by Jessica Simpson, the Goo Goo Dolls, Patti LaBelle, Good Charlotte, and all the judges, we finally have our winner.

(How TF is that possible? Before American Idol, Jamal was a P.E. coach at Crestwood Elementary in his hometown, Meridian, Mississippi… Something tells me he won’t be returning to that position. Just a hunch. He was notably also a contestant on another TV singing competition, BET’s Sunday Best, and made it to the final three.

After the big win, he shared an emotional IG post, featuring a photo of him mid-victory performance. “I’m still trying to process this… God is so good,” the winner wrote. “From my first step on that stage to this unbelievable moment, I never dreamed a kid from my hometown would one day be called American Idol. This journey has been bigger than me, and I’m so grateful for every person who believed in me when I was just chasing a dream.”Jamal thanked all the fans and promised that this is “just the beginning.”

Jamal’s mostly kept his personal life private, but he has shared that he has three daughters: Harmoni, Lyrik, and Gianna. And baby Gianna was actually born while he was on the show! Ahead of his Top 8 performance, Jamal said, “It was so personal to me, I did not share it. But I have a healthy, beautiful, baby girl born today.” I’m sure the girlies are all very proud of their dad right now.

He also revealed to Billboard that he didn’t get married before having kids. “Growing up in the church, of course we knew to be married before we had kids,” Jamal told the outlet. “I wasn’t, but being a dad is literally the best thing that ever happened to me.”
